Wisconsin Youth Resident license question for you guys?.

Unread postby KRONIIK » Fri Nov 22, 2019 3:54 am

So my 12 year old boy successfully completed his WI Hunter Ed course a couple weeks ago and is getting ready to hunt the regular WI. firearms season with me.
But I'm not sure what license to buy him.

I went to the WDNR website and read legalese until my eyes bled, but I must have missed something.

He received a WI resident small game license with his Hunter Ed certs, so he's set for coyotes.

He is also eligible for a First Time Buyer WI Resident deer license for $5.00.
Great price, but if I'm reading it correctly, that doesn't include a Buck Authorization-he'd be restricted to Antlerless only. Another relative argues that he can legally shoot a buck with that license, but I doubt it?
Obviously I want him to be legally able to shoot a buck if we see one; do I need to buy him the $20 (12-17 Y.O. Youth Resident Deer License?

We will probably be hunting mostly private in Iowa Co. and public in Sauk Co.

I already have my license with a Buck Authorization and multiple Antlerless for each of those two counties, but have no intention of filling more than one in each county, if that. (Unless a landowner insists, etc.)

I would recommend just calling a DNR office. They should be able to answer that rather quickly for you.

But I don't LIKE talking to bureaucrats! :snooty:

I guess it would be better than talking to a Warden after the fact!

The dnr has a question phone line. I've called a few times and they've been very helpful.

So I took all your advice and called the DNR Customer Service line at 1-888-936-7463 with my concerns and a nice, knowledgeable ladywomanperson answered my questions.

The $5.00 First Time Buyer Resident Deer License WILL include one Buck Authorization tag, and one Antlerless tag which is good Statewide, unlike the Antlerless tags that are issued with most other licences and which require use only within specific Counties.

Good news for my son to be able to shoot either and nice that I save 15 or 20 bucks when purchasing his license.

Thank you!
That makes three of us!

Unfortunately we've both been sick with some nasty respiratory sickness. One more day to get better. At least it won't be terribly cold Opening Day so I think we'll be able to suffer it out.

When my licenses were still classified as "Junior", I would receive 1 buck tag, 1 statewide antlerless, and two for farmland zones if I remember correctly.

That sounds about right.

I should have been more clear. The license in question was the ($5.00) First Time Buyer License, which is different than the Junior License for other 12-17-year-olds at $20.00.

The first time buyer is no different than a normal license, other than the reduced rate for being a first timer, and thus the same harvest authorizations would be issued. Glad everything worked out though.
