I just got some first lite Merino this year. So far a like it alot. Stayed warm even in rain when wet all the way through. Just watch out for the burs if it is the only layer you are wearing. Burs love wool.

Any traditional wool is junk if you make the mistake of machine drying it it seems......smart wool socks is good example.
Has modern day or hybrid wool blends resolved this issue?

Merino wool is not nylon or cordura.... it's a natural fiber and yes it can RIP. You have to know how to use a tool. As an insulated undergarment it cannot be beat except perhaps by alpaca which is also a type of wool, and perhaps down.

I machine dry all of my Minus33 base layers and my Smartwool socks without any issues.

Minus33 on Amazon is Icebreaker by a different name. Best you can buy IMHO.

No issues in washer or dryer.... On gentle.

Socks are all were presents and first few times they slip into anything other than gentle or hang drying-inevitable with non-hunting stuff-smart wool socks-fail miserably-get them every Christmas and have no pairs without holes or worth wearing at this point-same for my few other family members who gets the same every year-they are awesome comfort though while they last. Never had wool for hunting, but would like to update my early 2000 late 90's clothing with wool/wool blend modern stuff one of these days....I've earned it-ha. Only wool experience is the smart wool socks-so trying to better understand the risks and quality control out there. Gotta be able to machine dry with confidence, as sometimes you just don't have the hours to hang dry.

I have a smartwool 250 merino wool top 1/4 zip and love it. Comfortable, warm, 1/4 zip is great if you need to cool of. All of these products are expensive if you get direct from manufacturer so shop around and you should be able to find something you need at a good price.

All good options mentioned, and I’ll add Eddie Bauer has some good merino base layers at a good price they are usually on sale.
