Re: PA looking to decimate deer herd in the name of CWD
Slowing the spread in my opinion is only going to prolong the process. I believe it would be better to let it happen as it will, and once it's over any deer with immunity will be left to pass on their genes. Usually man intervening makes things worst. Another consideration is that by slowing the spread increases our exposure to it making it more likely to mutate and effect humans.
It's funny they aren't going after the deer farms. Also automobiles spread high risk deer parts all over the country far more than hunters. I don't know what they could do to stop that. It's not like you are going to call in a hazmat crew for every deer collision.

These CWD discussions are staying to sound a lot like scent control discussions.
It's not the destination, it's the journey getting there!

PA is very backwards thinking In all aspects deer hunting. This is why I go across the line and hunt other states. Maryland , WV , Indiana.

This has more to do with elk then it does deer. They have spent the last 100 years trying to get the elk population to where it is and they know the disease is creeping closer and closer to those elk.

The problem is that nowhere in that plan does it prohibit captive deer (the root cause).

I only ask you all this. How many deer has CWD actually killed? Then how many deer have been killed trying to eradicate CWD? And in killing all of those deer, has any progress actually been made to get rid of CWD?
Happiness is a large gutpile!!!!!!!

My thoughts as well. Didn’t Wisconsin go through the “wipe out the herd to stop CWD”? . Did this resolve anything ?

Good listen, like that he was honest "not a god dam thing we can do about it" & "try and depopulate, we know that won't help". Don't know what the answers are and I suspect this isn't a new thing, been around forever, probably best to just keep an eye on it until we know more. I also liked "the best thing we can do about it is ignore it" probably the best idea right now.

Re: PA looking to decimate deer herd in the name of CWD
There is really no way to fight CWD so the answer is to eliminate the population but to what benefit?
Deer are social animals. It doesn't matter if there are 10 or 100000, they will find each other.
No state has got CWD right because there is no right. Game Commission manages the population of deer vs forest health, public opinion and science as about as well as they can IMO. They are going to do what they can to 'stay ahead' of this but the end result will the same as every other state.
They should not remove the antler restrictions though IMO.

They are doing the same thing to us in SE MN. Used to be APR's, 1 buck per year, and 3 doe tags per year. This year is no APR's, 1 buck per season, archery, gun, and muzzle loader. Unlimited doe tags.
I have sent numerous emails to the DNR, but their minds are made up they are going to beat this thing. I have made the point that it has been out west since the 60's and hasn't been beat. All that information falls on deaf ears.
They are losing the battle and it shows in the number of CWD positive cases. It has gone up every year for the last 4 years even with less deer on the landscape.
It is in fact spreading, there are new cases 30 miles from the core of the disease where it was 1st found. The new cases are bucks, so in my mind, bucks are traveling further during the rut to find does. I told the MN DNR that also, you cannot surpresse mother natures instinct to procreate in these animals. A buck is going to travel until he finds a receptive doe. The less deer around, the further he is going to go.
I am not sure what the answer is, but trying to kill as many deer as possible, is 100% against what any hunter wants to see in the woods...

Agreed! This is my first year hunting out of state as well.. I am close to the NY border so here I come NY! lol. I am about done with PA and all the stupid stuff that goes on in this state. I don't think Sunday hunting is going to pass either which is the only day off I have with my kids. Great thing is I am close to NY.

"The deer decimation of the early 2000's" is the best thing that ever happened to deer hunting in a large portion of the state.
CWD, not so much. It flat out sucks. It sucks the PGC doesn't have the authority to go after the deer farms, but it is what it is. I trust the biologists and I'm glad they are at least trying to do something. Hunters are an important stakeholder but by goodness are their some short sighted ones.
