IDK , maybe it's not that new, but been hearing a lot of people using the phrase "stem count" lately.
As in, "there won't be any big bucks using this area because the stem count is too high"
Supposedly because they don't want to hurt their new growing antlers while in velvet.
Thoughts??

Re: The new "hot" phrase
nothing new
Just realtes back to habitat structure/density.
Getting another round of buzz from "habitat consultants" trying to stay relevant.
Changes often throughout the year.
Good at some times of year.
Bad in others.

Re: The new "hot" phrase
High stem count just means really thick. Whether a buck uses thick areas while in velvet depends on their personality. Some stay out to protect their soft antlers. Some don't care, dive in and end up with weird racks. Most are kinda in between. Depends on pressure. Human and animal.

Re: The new "hot" phrase
And here I opened this thread thinking the hot new phrase was "Boots on the ground"!
It's unreal how EVERYONE uses it....I've even seen it used in magazine articles recently.
From what I recall Dan pretty much pioneered the phrase, at least for deer hunting, back on the BBO videos....sure did catch on!

Re: The new "hot" phrase
It comes from the world of the florist, although it seems to be a great way to articulate "thick". I have heard Jeff Sturgis use it a bunch. I like hot phrases, they keep me warm at night.

I was going to guess the new hot phrase was "in-season scouting".

Re: The new "hot" phrase
Its been used in forestry forever. And like others pointed out it means its thick. And I noticed it being thrown out there a lot as well. If it gives people the illusion of intellect you can start a new one and tell people too many "stems pre acre" and really throw everybody off there game. or "dense species composition". Re: The new "hot" phrase
Which one is worse?
"Boots on the ground"
or
"you can't kill them from the couch?"
-- The couch phrase is posted about 1,000 times per hunting season on fbook hunting groups. It makes me hate myself for ever reading it.

Seem to be hearing “Hot sign” and “Buck beds” a lot as well. Dan is having a big influence on how people are hunting.
