little big buck
Little big buck...
When I was a kid no one really talked much about buck scores. A buck was a spike, 8 pointer, 10 pointer, etc. People got more excited by the heavy weights. That probably relates to the fact that most people hunted for food back then.
Even contests were based on weight in those days, or the number of points plus the weight. But most people didn't know what scoring even was.
I always loved deer, and deer hunting, and its never really been about "score"... More just the pursuit, and hopefully getting a "big buck". But, every now and then, a buck would grow big and old, but would not grow the giant rack to match. I loved them anyway. Every rack, and every deer is unique.
Sure, I strive for the biggest and most impressive deer living where ever I hunt. But you gotta admire that buck that scores 110 and weighs 198 dressed... If not, you might want to think about why you hunt.
Anywho, lets see some pic's of your "Little big buck"

Re: little big buck
I was talking to someone just the other day about this. It was a younger guy and he just could not wrap his head around the fact there was a time when no one cared and u got congratulated reguardless. Wasn't no scoring or folks going above and beyond to figure out what's mature and what's not. Times were simple, u saw something u liked and u shot it.
IMO, the p&y and B&C clubs were the start of the whirlwind we are in now. Anytime u attach a score to something it turns things into a competition. I got a wool coat a few years ago at a flea market that has acouple hunting patches on it. There's a 200# club patch, 8pt patch and a few others. None mention anykind of score. Thing has to be from the 70s.

Re: little big buck
But, in order to kill big bucks you gotta have this in your pack. Don't forget this either.
Agree with what is said above. But, pushing product is a lot of it too.
I recall those times when every deer was a trophy.

I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

Here’s one where the rack didn’t fit the body.

Heck I don't remember anyone ever weighing a deer around here either back in those days in PA. Like Dan said it was just an 6, 8, or whatever number of points that it had. Big buck contests around here were usually points plus spread.

Re: little big buck
I still don't know a thing about scoring, and we don't weigh them. The one in my profile, the rack is pretty decent for my area and body size he was a huge slob. I just always hope to shoot one comparable or bigger than last year. Some years I have passed and just shot an antlerless for meat when I didn't see a buck I wanted to take. Hunting is still pretty simple to me.
Here is a unique rack, my 2012 deer.

I’m actually not sure. To be honest I’ve never weighed a deer. He was pretty heavy though. I can still remember the drag!

Re: little big buck
In ohio they would post the results from gun season in the local paper. They would sometimes mention the points but all mentioned the weight. Funny how things have changed!

Besides when you nail a steak to the wall. They tend to get moldy and stink!!!

Re: little big buck
Never weighed it but had it next to a 180lb buck and it dwarfed it. Triple beam with a drop curled brow tine. Dad shot it on the run and came back to the cabin saying he shot one, gutted it, and couldn’t move it. He’s 6’2 300 in this picture for size reference.

Re: little big buck
I'd say the one that I got last year would fit this category.
Long body, short head and rack.
I actually had a chance to shoot at this buck while he was bedded one morning but he looked small so I didn't draw my bow, but when he stood up I seen that I should've taken the chance. I ended up getting him a few weeks later.
Not a huge deer but I'm guessing he was near 150 lbs.

Re: little big buck
I killed this one 2 seasons ago. Weighed in the 180s which is a little above average for my area. He was atleast 6.5, I'd had pics of him for 3 seasons and never was much over 80" or so. I've only ever seen 2 bucks that weighed over 200 lbs and I've killed 2 that weighed in the 190s.
