2 weeks to prepare milkweed

Unread postby Elite » Mon Sep 02, 2019 1:52 am

I have a gallon ziploc bag filled with pods. My season opens 9/14 and I need input about how to get the pods dried out and ready. There's a lot of condensation in the plastic bag.

Thanks!

Get them out of the bag before they rot. And then lay them in the sun to dry them out. Shouldnt take too long. I made the mistake of keeping them in a bag at first, they molded.

Like Vermont said, lay them out in the sun. I also put some on top of my dashboard by my windshield in the truck. They dry out pretty quickly

Like stated above, get them out of plastic and preferably into the sun. You can also place them in a paper bag, rolled up and left in a hot garage, this drys them too.

I just have them spread out on a shelf in my garage. They’re drying slowly, but not exposed to moisture. Got my first, albeit small, pod dried out a couple days ago.

Should I open them up or not?

I cut a slit with a knife, but don't pry them open. Once dry I pry open and place fluff in a zip lock for long term storage.

I picked a few yesterday too.

Yeah, I've been scoping out some spots and came across fields and fields of the stuff. I figure once they dry out I can start giving it all away. I'll put up a post soon to see if anyone wants some.

I just take a piece of cardboard, cut them right down the line in the crack so they open up just a little. I then run a tooth pick right through to the card board they dry out in a couple of days. I leave mine in the basement, it’s pretty damp down there and they dry out really fast. Whatever you do don’t leave them in a tied up plastics bag they mold up pretty quick. I have a ton of the stuff around where I work and last year I actually waited till February and it was already all dried out still hanging on the plant.

Do you guys leave them in the pods or de-seed them somehow?

I de-seed them and store the fluff in a zip lock for long term storage. Some guys keep them right in the pod
