Will my thermal rise.

Unread postby Tennhunter3 » Tue Aug 27, 2019 6:33 pm

This is what I have drawn up as a hunt.
Bedding is along red line.
Orange dots are deer trails.

It's a cliff just east of bedding about 20 foot drop.
My stand is green dot.

Oak trees are by the wind arrow.
Pines are by the tip of the point.

When can I hunt this without my thermal busting me?

The green dot from beginning of bedding is 68 yards to my planned tree.

Can a cloudy rainy day keep my thermal from rising?
Is their another way to set this up and be more effective?

Their is also bedding on the west facing side and a bench. But that's planned for another hunt on a different wind. By the western orange trail below. Didn't want to put a red line their and confuse anyone.

My entry is planned from southeast.

The point is about 15 acres in size.

This is planned afternoon hunt. Honestly I doubt I could even find the spot in the am its a living nightmare to get to this place.

I'm not worried about cordinents this is a similar ridge setup. This current point is in a safety zone. I picked a random point for this drawing.

I'm no help, but I'm in to see what the answers might be.

It's a challenge I know.
There's no way to get above in clearcut above the bucks.

Think I can split hairs and pull this off?
Yellow thermal blue wind.

Only other option I can think of would be come in when the sun is no longer on the valley floor and hope for thermal fall.

Do you expect them to get up and feed up to that knoll with the oaks? If so, you might wait until thermals start to fall and slip in on the west side of the knoll and stay where your falling thermals go west, but you can shoot the oaks.

Yes I do expect them to get up and feed on those oaks.
I just found this area yesterday.
So I havent gone in with smoke bombs and tried to figure its wind currents out.

As soon as I noticed it had some huge beds and a bench with thick cover and water I got out asap.

With a reliable food source like that, could you sneak in and hunt it last hour when thermals start falling

Or sneak in just at “grey light” and hunt until 10ish before the thermals begin to rise?

This is the other setup I drew up with the bucks bedded on the other side. The blue dot is water hole.
Red bedding, purple bench. Green for stand.

This sets up much better in my opinion.
But does limit the wind directions I can hunt the area.
I suspect bucks are using this on wind blowing torward the west and south.

Your probably right in saying go in at first light and hunt it until thermal rise. Would only be a 2 hour hunt. If the bucks got up to move around bedding or go to water I should be good.

You may be able to cheat a little more time in on a morning hunt. Just pay attention to the milkweed. Depending on the hills around you and the depth of the hollows

I have some around me I can get close to 11:00 am est before the thermal start working
