Trusted sources of deer hunting info??

Unread postby mheichelbech » Tue Aug 27, 2019 1:03 pm

Besides this website, Dan and others on here, who do you read as a trusted source of information about mature bucks? There are a lot of books out about deer hunting of course but I find it difficult to have much faith in what other guys say about deer hunting.

I have read Mapping Trophy Bucks by Brad Herndon which is a good book but it is not exactly a lot of info on mature buck tendencies.

I’ve also read the Eberhardt books but he is just too biased toward scent control and scrape hunting...nothing really new there.

My own conclusion is that there isn’t a better place, books, websites, videos, etc. than The Hunting Beast and Dan’s videos but sometimes I just like a different perspective...

I go there for laughs and soap operas! Classifieds are good though!

I try to get information anywhere I can and sift through it to see what makes sense and lines up with what I have experienced.
But a lot of places are more of an infomercial than real data.

WTH & THP are a couple I keep up with.

Haven't really watch WTH, but have watch a lot of the THP stuff. Those guys are really putting out some good content in capturing their hunts. Pretty neat how they hunt a bunch of states on public land. Their hunting is probably some of the most relatable stuff to us common folk.

As far as books, I like several of the Greg Miller books in particular Bowhunting Forests and Deep Woods. His focus isn't that much on bedding but some good info.

I’m just looking for stuff to read at bed time.

Jeff sturgis he seems to be more geared towards land managment but his book all weather whitetails is pretty good.

My favorite thing to "read" laying in bed is onx maps, but amy map service will do.

I like the free scholarly article search engines, too. Search stuff like whitetail deer habits, etc. and some pretty interesting articles are out there. Just gotta sit through a lot of stuff on CWD to find them.

i'll x2 the greg miller books. not bed hunting specific, but some great woodsmanship and sign reading in those books. mapping trophy bucks is another one worth reading. even though it isn't a book, i'd suggest reading the all time tactical threads. not sure how that works out for you in bed though. haha.

I’m a sucker for anything that Gene and Barry Wensel have put out. Gene has put out some good books. I own several of them and Barry’s last couple DVD’s were very good.

Jared Scheffler of whitetail adrenaline. Although he does not get into ‘how to’ or ‘instructional’ in his videos, if you can read between the lines there is a lot to learn from a guy capable of doing what he has done on public land. His videos are second to none in terms of entertainment and quality.

I will listen to that man talk whitetails any chance I can.

As far as books go. I like the stuff from the Benoit’s and Hal Blood. I have learned more about true big buck behavior from the big woods trackers than most other books. It’s just a different perspective when these guys follow mature bucks for miles vs someone who watches a tiny snapshot of that bucks day from sitting in a tree stand.

He's putting out some pretty good video's too. You just have to sift through what pertains to you.
