When to expect acorns to drop

Unread postby Elite » Tue Aug 27, 2019 9:21 am

I grew up hunting white oaks in Minnesota and know that they start dropping in September, but now that I'm in nw Wisconsin, there's red, pin, and bur oaks and I don't know when they drop. Can anyone comment on when they typically start dropping?

I live in Northcentral WI and we have a huge red oak in my back yard. It doesn't have a lot of acorns but it's starting to drop already.

Most years I wear a hard hat opening weekend if I’m in oaks. This year they are falling a bit earlier. Where I hunt it’s mostly reds and some whites

They're falling in my area already. Going for my training runs is crazy on some sidewalks.

It appears as if the el nino is over. Within the last couple weeks it's like someone turned the fire hose off. I can recall some of the trees in our yard still holding leaves in december from all the rain we had. I would expect things to happen faster this year with less rain. Typically mid to late september for the acorns here in ohio.

Since your in a new area. The best thing may be some boots on the ground checking of different species of oaks.

In general white oaks and other oaks in that family (includes all oaks with round lobed leaves). Drop earlier than red oaks (pointed lobed leaves). But like alot of stuff in nature. Generalizations can get thrown out the window at times.

In my area. Red oaks hit ground first, usually around mid September. Rest fall mid October to first November.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

In southern Wisconsin, bur oaks are done dropping before the start of the season. I don't think Wisconsin has pin oaks, but northern pin oaks that grow in upland areas.

I've seen many northern pin oaks in the areas I hunt up here.

Oaks are starting to drop here in WV, but its not a very good crop this year. I found very few trees holding nuts.

Here, in our part of Missouri, White Oaks don't drop until sometime mid to late September, on into October. Red Oaks drop around the same time. The time varies slightly from year to year, but not much. Although, I have seen Pin Oaks hold on late into the winter. Any acorns around here that are falling now, are wormy or being aborted by the tree. Critters don't seem too interested in those acorns.

Central NC. Came across a red oak dropping down in a creek bottom. Didn't see any white oaks on the ground yet.
