Hunting High
How high do you have to go in your tree to affect how your scent is carried? For example, this passed weekend I was scouting in hill country and I found a ditch crossing that runs perpendicular to a bench and the trails going through it made me feel like I was on the highway. It didn't take me long to realize the wind would be extremely tricky down there. But I was curious if I could get high enough in the tree to make it work.

Re: Hunting High
Your stand height will definitely effect your scent stream
I have moved up or down a tree 6’ to achieve where I needed my milkweed to float to clear a deers nose

Re: Hunting High
Height will vary, just trust your gut. I dont really hunt that high even in the hills. Do what makes you confident though.
With the right draw, you can get away with up wind. I think the main thing is focus on big buck sign vs deer sign. He may travel differently than the other deer so make the slight adjustment.
Screwing up is part of the game and learning spots.

Re: Hunting High
This doesn't directly answer your question, but i usually hunt pretty low. i'd say i average around 12 ft. i just make sure i know where my scent is going and that i'm OK with where it is blowing. i have killed many deer, and most between 10 to 15 ft. knowing where deer are expected to come from makes hunting lower easier, because you can just worry about hiding yourself from one side. this is just my 2 cents, and sorry for getting off track from your original question.

Every sit is different. I usually try to hunt high but have shot all my bucks on the wall under 20’

Re: Hunting High
It also depends on time of year....if leaves are still on the trees your wind will swirl much worse compared to no leaves.
