What is this plant?

Unread postby VaBowKill5 » Tue Aug 13, 2019 10:18 am

I have found a big public land buck and I’ve been scouting trying to figure out where I’m going to hunt him this fall. Today I found this plant that the deer are tearing up and I also found some killer bedding in it also. I have no idea what it is though. I’m in the mountains of southwestern Virginia and this stuff is growing on a steep south facing slope. Anybody recognize what it is?

Clearweed. In the nettle family. Will die back before fall.

That’s it. I thought it looked like nettles but didn’t sting at all which makes sense. Thanks for the help

Yep as stated above it’s a nettle it will irritate your skin but if deer eat green briars I don’t know why they wouldn’t eat this too. Around here It’s commonly called bull nettle or stinging nettle. It will light your skin on fire if it gets on you. If your legs are protected you should be fine. I used to have to avoid or walk around the stuff until I started wearing hip boots. It will die off in the winter.

We have a lot of bull nettle around me. I have heard deer would eat the leaves when other browse begins to dry out.

They are definitely hitting it hard right now in my area. In some spots it was nothing left but stems.

Mature bucks love those green wide leaf browse like that. Find some in the winter and its dynamite.
