Milkweed as of now
I was out shooting the bow tonight and decided to check multiple milkweeds. None of them had pods, which begs the question, what should the pods look like right now and when should I pick them?

Mine have about 1-2" green pods. Except the immature plants don't have any. I suppose it depends where in the country you are, and what your weather conditions have been like? For example, was there flooding that delayed growth?

They seem late this year in my area but there are more of them.

I'm in northern Wisconsin. Checked another spot loaded with milkweed plants, even mature ones, with no visible pods...

Lots of pods in my area, but really green yet. Gonna give them a bit before picking.

in a pinch, i've found that the dander from those tall picker plants or thistles (whatever you call them) work well for checking the wind. That stuff is everywhere right now.

I did pull a pod from a thistle. Just hoping I'll find milkweed...

Anyone know when the pods open up and start germinating in the midwest?

Might be a touch early or you found a lot of plants that aren't ready to produce them, sometimes just the biggest one make pods by me but I am pretty far north. I usually hit them up first week of Sept.

Hopefully this pic came through. This is what the pods should be looking like in my area of NE Missouri. IF you can find em. They are scarce this year around here. If you can locate some, you can cut a slit in them now and let them dry or wait another couple weeks, while letting them mature on the plant.

In the Upper Peninsula they typically open up about the last week of September. I usually pick a bunch Mid September, open them up, strip the seeds and throw a rubber band around the pod. (It's great that they come in their own handy dispenser.) Once they're completely dry, they can be put in a plastic bag and kept in my truck, for use as needed.
