I tried them and did not like them myself. Felt really uncomfortable climbing and they tore the tree up bad. On some trees like pine they got covered in pitch and became a PITA to handle. One time I was climbing a beech tree and a spur sliced its way down the tree and I dropped a couple of feet before it dug in. I found going around branches more difficult than with sticks as well.
I'm done with them. Selling a pair if anyone wants them. Some stealth stripping already applied. I'm not sure of the legality here in MA either. We're not allowed to pierce the tree on public and these most certainly do that.
Ever consider Climbing Spurs for deer hunting?
