Story of My First Deer

Unread postby Huntress13 » Thu Aug 01, 2019 4:01 am

I was a 28 year old newlywed and my then husband got me a Mossberg 500 12-ga. I got a few pieces of orange camo and off we went hunting. No tree stands, not even any seats, find a tree to sit against and if a deer comes by, shoot it. He liked to still hunt and walk around. So it comes around to the last day of the season, he tells me he is going to walk the far edge of the swamp that adjoins the property. People have seen a big buck in there. I'm sitting at the top of a small ridge in the woods on the edge of an old ag field with an irrigation ditch at the bottom of the ridge. I'm waiting and waiting for the big buck and happened to look over my shoulder to the right into the heavier woods, and I see a huge rump of a deer between the trees. Just a little bit of the rump. I wait and wait for it to move so I can see what it is and have something of the vitals showing. I heard another sound and turned my head for just a second and when I looked back, it was gone. Don't know if that was the big boy or not. Still sitting on the ground, finally I see movement, and it's an antlerless deer coming across the ag field. It crosses the irrigation ditch and stops on the bank in the thicker brush looking around acting spooky. All I can see is the head. I'm waiting and waiting for it to come out and now the light is going to start fading. I decided if I'm going to shoot it, it has to be now. So I took the shot to the head and it was DRT. Turned out it was a button buck. Somewhere I have a picture of it, but it was before everyone had digital cameras. I shot a lot of deer with that gun and still have it.

If I didn't know any better (which I don't), I'd say that someone is getting excited about deer season!

Good story.

Real excited. Except now I'm way more excited about bowhunting.

Sound like you were busy for little bit. Glad it turned out good.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

Nothing like your first. I shot my first in 1989, with an old compound, it was also a button.

Thanks for sharing.

My first buck was a spiker. I remember that buck more than my bigger one’s. Nothing like your first. 8-)

Shot my first deer October 7th 2015 at age 25 with my bow. It was a 8 point. I was sitting in a tree watching this big raccoon and heard noise and looked up and seen a buck and counted his points and he was a 6, I told myself this is the one and just as I was getting ready to shot I seen movement behind him and it was a bigger buck. He came 10 yards broad side and I shot him. I will never forgot that moment
