What arrow weight do you prefer
Do you prefer a light arrow with blistering speed or an heavier arrow with more energy? I shoot bolts and I'm digging the 445 grain maxis with a 75 grain insert with a 150 grain head for FOC. Fly like darts
It's all fun and games till someone looses an eye..... then its just fun

Re: What arrow weight do you prefer
I think most on here opt for the heavier weight in order to get the most penetration you can. I think there is an over under line that everyone has to come to regarding speed though.
In my experience having the best chance to get an exit wound on a shot that went wrong is by far the side to err on. Trying to track a deer where there wasn't enough penetration to get an exit wound is mighty tough.

Re: What arrow weight do you prefer
After trying a heavy arrow build last year (around 630 grains) I was very pleased in the arrows performance on less than ideal angled shots. Mature bucks are notorious for not giving gravy broadside shots. It’s a very common occurrence when you get a muy grande chasing a hot doe all around you but you can’t get him to stop broadside. If my equipment can give me the ability to get to the vitals on hard angled shots I’m going to build it and shoot it. I’ve got two different builds I’m shooting off my compounds this year and both are heavier than last years. I’ve never heard anyone complain that their arrow penetrated too much.
Teaching is only demonstrating that it is possible.... Learning is making it possible for yourself.

400 grains is my minimum and I Want FOC around 19%. I try to get closer to 500 but with the shorter arrow, it can be tough.

Re: What arrow weight do you prefer
I have been shooting a mid weight arrow. I’m looking to build a stronger/heavier setup this year. It will be around 490 to 510.

I like a heavier arrow. Around 200 grains upfront gives plenty of FOC and penetration.

26 inch draw, 60lb Bowtechs, 450 grain cut on contact for antelope and further western shots. For east coast and timber hunting whitetails. 550 grain sledgehammers. Axis 340s with 50 grain brass hits and 200 grain single or double bevel up front. Pure bone breaking power even with a small draw length and lower poundage.

Re: What arrow weight do you prefer
My whitetail arrow is 525 grains. I shoot feathers on the back and do my best to front load my arrow but keep my spine correct. 200 grains total upfront between the half outsert and the broadhead(bishop holy trinity fixed blade). I can push that arrow around 290 FPS. I love a heavy arrow for penetration and bad shot placement reasons. I don’t go Ashby heavy (650 grains) because I like a balance between speed and weight and for a whitetail arrow I believe I have a good medium. My hog hunting arrow is a 830 grain arrow and if I ever hunted elk or large game I would be Ashby street legal all day long.

500 grain. I'm a 25" draw, leave the arrows a couple inches long. 100 grain brass inserts, 125 grain broadhead.
Twigs in my hair, don't care.

Re: What arrow weight do you prefer
Shoot a 50 lb recurve with a 652 grain arrow about 22% FOC. Makes my gaps small and arrow goes exactly where I'm looking. None of my hunting set ups are going to give me a shot out to 15 yards. I love shooting a heavy arrow.

Re: What arrow weight do you prefer
I’m shooting a Black Eagle Deep Impact 4 fletch, 100 grain stainless outsert and solid 175 Gr. VPA up front. It’s about 575 total grains. Hits extremely hard and flies really good. Shoot 65 lbs. and 27” draw.
