Another reason to pack out your deer is if you don't have a truck to put the whole body in. Happened to me when I drove my car, my wife needed her truck for work, but I still wanted to hunt Indiana's October opener. Just to be careful I brought plenty of garbage bags, two coolers to put the pieces in and figured I'd stop at a gas station for ice if need be after everything was packed away.
Fortunately I was successful and things worked out real good. I cured the meat in the downstairs fridge for about a week and then processed/trimmed things up at home. The meat tasted great as well as the head shoulder mount was fantastic.
Thanks for all the good words of advice, especially the common theme of checking the state's regulations!!
