Mountain bucks of WV
First off let me say I’m new this forum. But I’ve been listening to Dans podcasts and I’m trying to apply his knowledge of bedding areas to the mountains of West Virginia but it’s difficult. He talks a lot about swamp bedding and quiet honestly I don’t have and swampy areas where I hunt. Can anyone give me some ideas of where to begin to look for bedding areas for mature bucks..... Also the areas I hunt have all been timbered within the past 10 years so everything is thick. Thanks

Re: Mountain bucks of WV
I have made a few trips to WV over the years. The area I hunted was big timber with mountainous terrain.
I have found they bed on points and spurs with the wind at their back. I have found beds in the heads of tight bowl shaped hollows. And the edges of mountain laurel thickets are a good place to look for bedding.
The edge of the clear cut and the right terrain features in the cut will be a good place to look also.
I don’t find many beds worn to the dirt. It seems the deer have lots of options for good bedding and seem to move around a good bit.

Those little spindly rubs will be where the food is. For me, the beds usually aren’t far from that.

Another thing to look at, where is the pressure coming from? When you scouting, and you run across sign remember to ask yourself, why would this deer be here? and move from there!
