I know we talk a lot about the tendencies of deer and rightfully so. We talk about their senses especially their ability to smell using the wind and thermals. We write about their ability to find the best bedding places to keep them safe from predators including us. We even identify that they watch us enter the lands we hunt them on sometimes. When trying to develop new strategies it's often good to look at things from a new perspective. So in this thread I'm asking, What are the advantages that we have as human beings? What are the things that give us an edge? I wonder if we might get some new insights.
I will start with two obvious ones. The first is that we can get it wrong a thousand times but if we get it right once the game's over for the deer. The second one is that unlike other predators we can strike from many yards away, even hundreds of yards away. Now it's your turn. What advantages do we have?

Re: The Advantage of Being Human
We have definitely used our brains a lot, seeing how we as a species have pretty much conquered the world. I think that's kind of one of the appeals to hunting is grounding yourself and reminding yourself of some of our disadvantages such as we have got to be one of the slowest land mammals. But we get to use our brains to overcome that

Re: The Advantage of Being Human
I think a lot of the "advantages" we have can serve as a weekness. Humans can reason, we are somewhat intelligent. Even those of us who are in the woods a lot have a hard time relating to deer. I feel like we, as humans, spend a significant amout of time growing up trying to stay alive while driving, working and extreme hobbies. A mature buck on public learns to survive early on or it doesnt make it.
Other sdvantages:
* We can cover a lot of ground observing.
* We can chase game without being shot at (most of
the time).
*We know our quarry really well.

I have been dedicated to hunting bucks for twice as long as most mature bucks have been on this earth. Many guys have been honing this craft longer than I have been on this earth...

Re: The Advantage of Being Human
I immediately think of our ability to reason with a higher degree of foresight. I've heard Dan say that mature bucks have the ability to reason to some degree and I completely agree with that. But, within that realm of reasoning, I think a major factor that sets whitetails and humans apart is our depth of foresight - or our mental preparedness. Basically, we can assume or predict many outcomes and then adapt accordingly and appropriately. Well, sometimes...
