Re: New Minnesota positive cwd
So much bad news seems to flow from places with "CWD-positive captive cervid facility".

Re: New Minnesota positive cwd
It will be an interesting year for CWD in MN. There are currently a few bills on the table that would have an impact on cervid farms if passed.

Except for all the dead deer the DNR gave tags out for trying to eradicate the disease. Some areas still haven’t recovered from unlimited EAB.

Spot on Dewey. Northern Wisconsin especially.

I'm hoping the polar vortex temps we had for a while will help cull the sick ones. My understanding is that the mild winters have been allowing for the disease to move further north.

"Sick ones" often don't even show signs of having it for 2-3 years. Any deer that has contracted CWD in the last year or two wont even have symptoms and will have no disadvantage going into the winter compared to deer without it. Its going to be statewide eventually, and its going to be country wide one day too. Unless they come up with a cure, nothing will stop it. Especially not culling. All that will do is slow it down a bit, but weaken the healthy herd.

On the bright side, the Governor sounds excited to get more money to spend:
Gov. Tim Walz is proposing new funding of $4.57 million over the next two fiscal years, and $1.1 million annually thereafter to combat the disease, including surveillance and response, enforcement, and outreach to landowners.
