Well it's official (almost)

Unread postby oldrank » Tue Jan 01, 2019 7:22 am

The end of deer season is upon us in Michigan once again. I have posted my thoughts on this a few times in the past. I usually do a self evaluation of where I am headed with this hunting thing at the end of the season. The last few years I have really pushed myself. I've had moderate success but it has taken a toll on my body.

I will be going in soon for a 2nd hernia surgery. Both I believe we're caused by pulling deer out of the woods myself. I will be 45 next October. I try to stay in good shape but I have to admit I'm not 25 any more. Bad back, bad knees, bad shoulders n so on.

To make a long story short... I am buying property. I have talked with the wife, she is fine with it as long as we get something we both enjoy. I am currently looking in the Eastern part of our upper peninsula. I have decided there because I can get a decent size piece of land and still stay on budget. My wife also loves the area and we vacation there often.

I doubt this will fully put and end to my public hunting days. It will be about 4 hours from where I live anyhow. It will however give me a place to go and get away from the crowds I deal with down here. It will also be something that I can control and have fun with. Also something I can hunt into my twilight years.

We have a list of lots we are going to be looking at. I am very excited and can't wait for next year.

Awesome! Be a nice place to have deer camp if you have some family to hunt with. Always enjoy reading your post and the perspective of another Michigander. Good luck

I am hoping as my boys grow into adults they learn to enjoy it. Right now I have only a few friends and family that hunt anymore. The idea of a deer camp is awesome and I have definitely thought about that. There is that old saying "If you build it, they will come".

I am looking at 40 acre minimum. A good percentage of what I have look at connects to national Forest. Yes big woods. There is some ag around from the maps I've looked at.

Sounds like a good move. I wish you luck. Its always feels good to step foot on new property.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

Good luck oldrank! On both your search and rehab.

Definitely big woods. My dad’s side had hunting land and lived around Florence, WI in the far NE corner of WI. Nice country.
