Late season still hunting

Unread postby Nick grider » Mon Dec 17, 2018 12:26 am

I’ve been having some good hunts slipping into bedding areas mid day without being able to get a shot with my muzzle loader. I slowly and cautiously slip into these areas and the deer will stand up from there beds between 35-60 yards from me and take off. Does anyone have any better strategy to be a little more ready for them when sneaking in these areas without setting up a stand? I’m thinking that I’m going to setup by a tree and start breaking twigs to intentionally try and get them on there feet and I could be more prepared

Bring some good binoculars and spot them first.

I’ve got vortex glass and have tried that. They typically bed in dead fall so I can’t see them.

Just keep doing what your doing and wait for the one that runs a little and stops to turn back and look to see what you are.

Are they winding you? Seeing you?

If they're winding you then you need to change your approach direction.
If they're seeing you then you need to either stop further away or move slower.

If they're only hearing you than I would possibly grunt to give the impression that I was a deer moving around.

Good luck!

They are seeing me for the most part. I had a decent buck at 40 yards with my muzzle loader yesterday digging up some acorns from the fall. Couldn’t get a shot because of the thicket and he eventually winded me.
