In need of advice on mountain buck bedding

Unread postby Danny1977 » Sat Dec 08, 2018 1:44 am

Hello Hunting Beasts,

In need of some advice on where this buck is possibly bedding. as well as where any other mature buck in the area could be bedding. Threw one sit at it and didn’t see a thing(prob because it was a heavy snow fall?). 3 hr hike in. I scouted this area last spring and found lots of scrapes & rubs yet this was before I knew to look for buck bedding. I can give it one or two more sits before the season ends. Wind is typically from the west or northwest during the late season. From the south or southwest once in awhile yet more in the early season.
Thanks all,
DATM

Maybe it is just me but the images aren’t showing up.

You need to host them and then post the link with the image link.

I have an account with ImageShack. IMGBB is another one that I use and I think it’s free. But, there are other hosting services.

If its public, I don't recommend posting them. PM someone for help. Most people would be glad to help, myself included

i would start looking on the areas of steepest grade above benches and drainages 90% of the big mountain buck beds that i find are cumming off this type of terrain. i also find mountain bucks run the king of the hill so find the highest points of elevation another big thing is escape if there are thick swamps below where they can make a mad dash too hide. i know big bucks will bed in other areas but the steep stuff typically gives you more limited bedding options upping your odds. i look for the exit with the best sign first usually a wad of scrapes and poop mid season. but come late season these spots could never be touched buy mature animals. food is major if there is farm fields two miles away i would get in between that direction of travel. sometimes food is not easy too figure then i rely on snow too show me the pattern. could be water crest in a spring or a brier thicket with some green left. if your exit trails are not same direction as entry hit them more often then usual sometimes it could take a big buck days too hit that trail again. and if hes not there every day ground scent is just a gamble or a missed opportunity. its often a war of attrition in the mountains. ive ran cams on exit trails out of these great bedding locations and found that it can take days if not weeks for a buck too exit that way twice. but once he hits that ground scent its game over. this is why after early season i abandon the mountain beds and hit the farm country its just not high percentage for me. i need a destination of travel late season and limited secure bedding too make it worth a while.

Very insightful. Thank you so much. The mountains in my opinion take more work and patience then most other types of areas to hunt. There’s some steep stuff on that knob to the SW and based on the TC pics it looks as if that’s where he came from. But then again I’ve only captured him on TC 2-3 times.

As far as a food source, there’s an open field about 1.5 miles away. I could be wrong but I’m presuming that his main food source is acorns and plant leaves.

Thanks much for the info. Def taking it to heart when I go in to kill him
