Milkweed Alternative

Unread postby funderburk » Fri Nov 23, 2018 12:27 pm

Hello! Been following the Beast for a couple of months now and finally decided to become a part of this wealth of knowledge. Thanks everybody for being so willing to share your wisdom and experience. I'm learning so much!

My question is: Are there any alternatives to milkweed in South Carolina? I've had no luck finding milkweed in my area, but certainly want to give it a shot. Thoughts?

Mike

Cotton balls. From a cotton ball pull out a couple of cotton threads/fibers and release them. They're light enough the float for a while.

Tried that for a few hunts. Only problem is if the wind is calm, it’ll fall straight down (even if I feel a slight breeze).

I'll say those puff bottles, talc powder or whatever they are, are a viable alterative. I don't really think the puff bottles are that bad. I kinda prefer them to milkweed for the ease of deployment and the fact they aren't as messy. Milkweed has a time and place, definitely illustrates air currents in more detail, but the puff bottles give a nice quick approximation. I like to have both on me but if I had to choose one or the other I would probably just choose the puff bottle.

Make the piece you place in the air as small, light, and thin as possible. Its not milkweed, but the thinner the better. Ive done it before and it works in place of milkweed.

This is my first year strictly using milk weed. I've already gone through almost four pods, haha. I used to use the powder stuff. I find that I like to watch the stuff drift out as far as I can see it to really figure out what the wind is doing. I'm often surprised. But if I don't use a big parachute piece of milk weed I can't track it with my eyes much farther than about 40 yards or so. I've considered other things like dandelion seeds, but they are just too small to really see for a distance and I also don't want to spread those nasty little seeds everywhere.

I run both as well. Each has a time and place.

Cotton balls seem to work good for me in a pinch. The dried cattails seem like a great alternative.
On my deathbed, I will receive total consciousness. So I have that going for me, which is nice!
