Attention Wisconsin Deer Hunter,
You are receiving this message because you may plan to harvest a deer within a recently established bovine tuberculosis surveillance area consisting of nine townships in Dane and Columbia Counties. This area was established in response to a recent case of bovine tuberculosis (bovine TB) found on one Waunakee-area dairy farm.
While very rare, bovine TB is a bacterial infection that can affect deer, other wildlife and humans. For more information on bovine TB and answers to frequently asked questions, visit us online.
Bovine TB has not been found in free-ranging whitetail deer in Wisconsin. In an abundance of caution, the Department of Natural Resources is requiring hunters that harvest deer in the bovine TB surveillance area to provide the deer head for bovine TB testing.
Required Bovine TB Testing Area
The townships included in the required bovine tuberculosis surveillance area are the Dane County townships of Dane, Vienna, Windsor, Springfield, Westport and Burke and the Columbia County townships of Lodi, Arlington and Leeds.
How to have your deer tested for bovine TB
Hunters who harvest deer within the area must bring in the head with six inches of neck tissue for bovine TB testing.
Hunters may bring their harvested deer to one of the drop-off kiosks or facilities listed below. Technicians will remove lymph tissue from the head and neck and submit samples for testing. If you choose to use one of the drop-off kiosks and technicians are not available when you arrive, please follow the instructions posted on the kiosk.
