You can get a good amount of stabilization from the sling on the rifle setting it up to use as a Hasty sling. Try it on your next range trip you will be surprised.

My rifle/shotgun/ML wear a sling for this purpose. I rarely use them to carry the weapon.

Thanks for all the responses, everybody! I'm heading out next weekend on some MN public land. Hopefully I come out un-perforated, and ideally 200lbs heavier than I went it.

I use a cinch strap a lot. I'm used to shooting off a hanging strap from my military days. Put pressure into the strap to add stability. I hang it from upper limbs and adjust it to where I can rotate to get a lot of angles. I've used 550cord in a pinch. I do this a lot on observation sits where a sub 300 yard shot could present itself.
