Deer on Pheasant Opener
Does anyone use the pheasant opener in your state to your advantage? In other words, do you have a specific strategy for deer hunting knowing that pheasant hunters are going to be walking around and potentially kicking up deer? If so, please share this strategy in detail. Thanks!

Re: Deer on Pheasant Opener
I have had this issue early season w dove hunters. Cant say iv figured anything out whatsoever though... May be a good strategy to stay on the ground and adjust based on whats happening. Once I saw a buck stay put in a field as hunters and dogs walk right by them, after they passed he stood up and moved. Idk anything about bird seasons but if it opens during deer season it probably wont take long for the deer to adjust. They can tolerate the shooting but may not use those beds they have been using. If its a property bird hunting happens every year, the mature deer will probably already be in better bedding areas anyways. One issue iv considered is they arent getting up until after dark or travelling as far bc of it though...
Just my thoughts, havent been successful in this situation yet.

I appreciate your response! I think your estimations could certainly be correct. I wonder if there are hunters on this site that actually look forward to these bird openers as they have found a way to take advantage of the pressure. In my area, there really isn't too many places the pheasant hunter wont go. They certainly cover the perimeters really well. I think I have heard Dan talk about hitting the marsh islands but I can't remember if he specifically was talking about the pheasant opener or not. I guess I have a reason to re-watch Marsh Bedding!

There is a piece of public that I know guys hunt. I dont personally hunt this spot but they do. They have several spots they hunt and have hauled some bruisers out of there on the pheasant opener. The guys using dogs push the deer through funnels and drive the thick stuff. Awesome time to shoot a dandy. I seen a monster buck chased from a hollow from some beagles running around several years back, too far of a shot on him tho. This pheasant opener is a well kept secret amongst some good hunters.

If you know their escape routes out of certain fields I could see it working to your advantage. Even if you don't know the escape routes, maybe watch from an observation stand, your truck, or where ever and see where they kick deer out of the CRP, where they run, etc. After that you can come up with a plan to sit near one of the escape routes they take or their end destination. I would say after the first couple weeks of season and getting bumped a few times, they'll probably locate to better bedding, or beds that they can watch the access for pheasant hunters. Other than that if you hunt near a field that will get hunted on pheasant opener, sit til after at least 9am

I'd set up in an area where deer may potentially retreat to in the timber where the pheasant hunters won't go and the deer may feel secure. I would think a river bottom or forested swamp area may be a good set, or else a good funnel in the timber between the CRP/Ag field getting hunted and a swamp/river bottom/bedding area.
