Where’s all the fawns???
Hey y’all, I’m in Sheboygan and Fond du Lac counties. I have not seen a single fawn with any of the 50 does I’ve seen this year. I spoke with a good friend who owns a 40 acre farm and much more land attached. He has cameras up and has gotten plenty pictures a does and not a single fawn all spring and summer. Also spoke to another friend who said he’s seen some up north but after I asked the question about here local he said he hasn’t seen a single fawn either. I’ve even been shining and haven’t seen not even one.
Guess it’s kinda freaky. Anyone know what the deal is?

Seen a lot of singles in southern, MI. Saw more doubles and triples last couple of years but have still been seeing them.

Re: Where’s all the fawns???
On my trip up north and back home this week I was surprised the number of car killed fawns I saw especially when I was driving around Vilas county. That really hurts to see that because the herd needs every bit of help they can get up there. I did see a number of fawns and even a few twins with momma so that was good. In the past month I have seen plenty of fawns around FDL county. Can't say anything about Sheboygan county since I don't spend much time there.

Re: Where’s all the fawns???
I've stumbled onto a handful of fawn remains, looked like the work of coyotes. Keep meaning to step up my predator control but this heat talks me out of it every year.
Most of the live ones I've been seeing lately appear to be spending there time in the more open areas. Looks like mama has them bedded on field edges in the tall weeds or in overgrown ditches along the side of roads. I believe the does realize the predators stay away from roads and intentionally hide them there. That might explain why you are seeing em hit by cars Dewey. Maybe not but that's what they do around here.

Re: Where’s all the fawns???
their tiny little lungs got clogged with all the milkweed wind testers and they died.
oh and bears, coyote, bobcats, wolves, cars, and CWD got what was left.

Most here are singles.
With the over 100 heat index the last 3 weeks I’m sure many have died.

Re: Where’s all the fawns???
Glad to hear there's regular sightings. It's simply odd, moreso in Shebagdad county since I spend most of my time there. There's been an odd pattern the past few years and my experience simply adds to the confusion.
Last year there was hardly a deer in the Sheboygan marsh. Spent 3 weeks there and saw 2 does. NOT NORMAL at all and there wasn't even buck sign. I found 3 rubs that I would call "mature" sign and I spent 4 full days scouting in season. Also, there was hardly but a few shots opening gun season day when typically it sounds more akin to a war zone.
Coupled with that, this past winter during the warm ups I saw any where from 10 to 15 deer in the fields joining the marsh. There wasn't a mature doe in the whole bunch. Every one of them were same year fawns, short, triangle noses and didn't weigh more than 70 pounds. I saw this occur on 4 different warm ups when they'd hit the fields to eat and regularly shine this location and the rest of the fields surrounding the marsh.
Very odd events close to home for me.

Re: Where’s all the fawns???
I've seen more this year in Illinois than I can remember. I'm hoping our coyote population is taking a hit but I doubt it.
I was in Lake Geneva this weekend and every time I was in the car I saw at least one, almost hit a few mid day. They looked pretty healthy too.

Re: Where’s all the fawns???
I wasn't seeing any fawns at all back in late spring early summer here in central MN. Now I'm seeing a few but mostly singles.
