guess the age

Unread postby Grizzlyadam » Sat Jul 21, 2018 3:56 am

So I started gathering a collection of teeth to send out to have aged. I had two sets from 2016, and one set from 2017 that I sent out in December. I recently got the results and was slightly surprised at them. In light of a recent thread on old bucks, I figured I would post up the bucks and have some fun hearing your guesses and hopefully we can all get something educational out of it. I will admit that I did have some history with all of these bucks so MY guesses were based more on that then many other factors. In the end I was wrong on every one of them but only by a year for each. These are all bucks killed in the NW corner of CT in farm/hill areas.

So in order of my kills I will start with my 11/13/16 archery buck. This buck was killed an hour after sunrise on the downwind edge of a bedding area where there were half dozen of fresh scrapes. He came in downwind and made another scrape ten yards in front of me then offered up a five yard shot. I hit him hard quartering to and took out the top of the heart, he ran about 80 yards. He dressed out at 194 pounds and gross scored in the low 130s. I'll include a trail cam pic of him from late summer, it was the best pic I could find that gives a good view of his body structure.

The second one was killed on 12/26/16 muzzleloader season. He was shot at about 30 yards or so broadside while following a doe and skipper into a bedding area shortly after sunrise. He went about 40 yards and piled up. His dressed weight was 161, and he gross scored around 115. The trail cam pic was from mid November. I was sitting about 150 yards away when the pic was taken and I could hear him crashing antlers with another buck for a while but never got a good look at either of them. It was a very exciting exciting morning just hearing them. Over a month later when I killed him he was busted up pretty good, every point had at least some portion missing.

Not sure how it views for others, but those pics are too small for me to see the details needed to age on the hoof.

The final one was another muzzleloader kill from 12/9/17. I had been hunting this particular buck all archery and rifle season and finally connected on my 40th birthday out of an old permanent stand in a snow storm. He came out of a bedding area wind to his back about an hour before sunset and walked by offering a ten yard shot. I hit him a little far back in the liver for some reason, but he only went 100 yards. He dressed out at 142 pounds and gross scored upper 130s. I had dozens of cam pics of this buck all over the property i was hunting and it was just a matter of time before he slipped up. My brother actually passed him up twice and got some good video footage out of the same stand the year before on a windy day during the rut. This buck meant a lot to me, still waiting on a call from the taxi man. Can't wait to see him again.

I'm not sure how to make them bigger, I finally just figured out how to post pictures today. I put them in the beast gallery, maybe they can be viewed differently?

Looks like you posted thumbs. Is there a choice for larger pics? I use Postimage so not familiar with the Beast gallery.

They all look mature and around 4 to me. That first one I might say 3 cause his neck looks small in the trail cam pic but it might be the angle. But any of them older wouldnt be a shocker. It's hard to say on those shots

I'll guess 3, 4 and 4

Where did you get the teeth aged? I’ve been wanting to do that for a while now. Its a cool experiment to see how accurate we think we are at aging bucks on the hoof. I’m dying to find out how old your bucks are.

I just rounded up the jaws of these three, for some it may help. I could never tell much from the molars. The first two I accidentally burnt in the boil pot. The front teeth were sent out to deerage.com. Keep the guesses coming.
