Re: Not what I am looking for
The first pic I got of my 2009 buck
The second pic
I knew from the direction he was coming from that he had to be bedding in an old clearcut.
When the acorns dropped he changed his pattern. I put my cam where I thought he would be.
Waited until I got the right wind on Oct the 8th.
I really feel that the sooner I get a pic of one the sooner I am in the game.
All these pics were on public, except the last.
It was in my yard.

That buck was my 2010 buck, not 2009, my bad.

Way to guess on them acorns though man! That is tough to do. The older bucks I get on cam in the summer dont seem to stick around. Oct 1st and Nov 1st I can have completely different bucks around.

Re: Not what I am looking for
I definitely agree that come Nov 1 a buck could be anywhere, but wherever a buck is bedded right now is probably right where he is gonna be come Oct 1.
The first 2 pics of that buck were taken about 500 yards South of his bed.
The 3rd pic was taken 100 yards East of his bed.
He was still bedding in the exact same place, just leaving in a totally different direction.
I don't think bucks move to a different area between now and Oct 1 that often. They just change their direction of travel due to changing food sources and people have trouble adapting to it.

Great point. I have several spots where I can't hunt all four directions which makes it much harder to sort out. I was initially thinking they were just relocating early.

Re: Not what I am looking for
Here in Southern Indiana the white oaks are abundant.
A deer does not have to travel very far to feed once the acorns drop.
A buck will bed where he feels safe, and if the closest bean field is a half mile away, he will travel a half mile.
Once the acorns drop he may only have to travel 50 yards to feed.
He is not gonna walk all the way to that bean field you have been seeing him in all summer when he can walk 50 yards and fill up on acorns.
He is still bedded in the same place, just not traveling as far, or going in a totally different direction, or both.
Last year there were no acorns here. Years with no acorns mean they could relocate because they don't focus on any particular food.
They just feed everywhere all random and I have a hard time closing the deal early during years like that.

Re: Not what I am looking for
Great points in this thread. I agree with a lot of what has been said. I dont think they move their beds for every food source either. I deal with abundant oaks too, but luckily (I think) the white oaks are sparse. So if I can find a patch of them dropping and can relate it to a bed, I might be in the game.

I would rather find a bed and look for the nearest oaks , not find oaks and look for the nearest bed.
I run cameras to hopefully get a pic of a shooter and figure out his direction of travel.
By educated guesstimating I do my best to predict where he is bedding due to the direction his but is pointing in evening pics.
Then I try to figure out where his closest source of water will be.
He will probably hit acorns on the way to the water without going any farther out of his way than he has to.
