Biggest weakness
What is your biggest weakness as a hunter?
I have many, but my knowledge of hunting public land is my biggest. That why I'm here, to get better

Re: Biggest weakness
I have numerous weaknesses but if I had to pick out the biggest I would say spread to thin. I have numerous hobbies that I enjoy, so instead being the absolute best I can be at hunting. It gets divided up between other activities. I try to reach a balance point of fun and giving myself a real chance at a good buck.
Life is hard; It’s even harder if you are stupid.

Re: Biggest weakness
Making the most efficient use of my hunting and scouting time. As much as I would love to hunt every day of the season, or burn all 3 weeks of my vacation on hunting each year, I just can't. Even if it means working early in the season when I want to be hunting, or helping out my wife with the kids before everyone gets burnt out, just putting forth my best effort means carefully choosing which days I want to hunt based on rut movements and good cold weather. Getting ahead at work so I can be fully focused instead of in a perpetual state of procrastination that eventually eats into primetime hunting. Then when I am hunting, to make optimum use of my hunts to have a chance at killing a mature deer every single time. Less throwaway hunts where I am just guessing on a location or going in blind because I hadn't scouted enough. Better planning so I can take an out of state hunt which I haven't been able to do in a couple years.

Confidence, really believing i'm in the most effective spot for the given conditions. Next would be effectively processing all of the information I've gained in the off season. I am having trouble deciding which spots to sit and when.

Re: Biggest weakness
Being afraid of public land I was taught my whole childhood to just stay away from public land unless you wanted to get into fist fights and deal with a million other hunters. Just the last few years I have started venturing out on public and realize I have really been missing out. I still have a little bit of a fear of something bad happening for some unknown reason but I am getting better at it. I think it's the fear of confrontation that makes me talk myself out of hunting a public spot and going to my normal areas. Really dumb I know

Dragging a big buck out of the swamp by myself is my weakness. I needed help last year. Im Kinda leery about showing people my spots. So I’m starting to work out because of it. Lol

Re: Biggest weakness
I haven't read any replies so I'm not trying to call anyone out, but these types of threads normally get answered with "lack of time" or "I have too many other things/family going on/I work too much, etc". Ok that's not a weakness, that is your availability. You're not really sharing or admitting anything. Sorry, just a pet peeve.
My weakness is that I'm not great at scouting. I can recite all the things that Dan says on his videos, but put me on a piece of brand new public land, and I'm pretty lost at where to start. Most of my "scouting" is by giving a spot a try, and basing all of my knowledge of the area on observation. And then I tend to stick to spots that I've had any any success with too long and overhunt them.
I had a limited time available this past late winter/spring. I CHOSE to spend it planting fruit trees and natives on my small farm instead of scouting the heck out of the public ground that I occasionally hunt. Sure I could complain about needing more time to do it all, but I really should have allocated more time to scouting. That's my fault, it's certainly not a weakness.

I was just thinking about this today, myself. You raise a good point. I think for some, not all, that this is the go to excuse when someone realizes the commitment to this type of hunting. I personally have only found a few good bucks beds this spring, and after seeing their location, I understand why the area was picked by the deer... they are hard work to get to!
I think the idea of hunting big bucks sounds good on the surface to many, but once they have dug in a time or two they realize they don't want to put in the continued effort. That is when the "too busy with other commitments" talk begins.
You don't have to dedicate your life to scouting. I think I have been out maybe 10 times since last season ended, around 3-4 hours each time (that's like 40 hours out of the 4000+ hours I have had since January). I have identified 15 potential spots and found some good beds. I'm sure if it is a passion for a person, they will be able to squeeze in the time while not neglecting family or work. Like you said, it's what you choose to do with your free time. Just my opinion.
Bummer of a birthmark, Hal.

Getting too aggressive. The bump and dump and observation sits are gonna be my best friends until I find that sweet spot.

Active bladder
Man I have to take a leak so much
Have to stay hydrated down here and well....it leads to
Unnecessary movement. Or too much too often.

Same here
I’ve also had bad run in’s with wild dogs that keep me on-edge in certain areas as well.

Re: Biggest weakness
Overthinking. I’m an engineering student, and have always been very detail oriented, so I analyze everything. Which definitely has its moments of helpfulness, but I’ve caught myself times before just racking my brain about a deer, trying to analyze every single little detail, and sometimes I have to remind myself that even that 5+ year old buck is just an animal. That has helped me have success before. I think sometimes we need to simplify things, or I do, atleast.
