Oddest bed I've ever found

Unread postby mauser06 » Thu May 10, 2018 3:21 pm

Today while turkey hunting I came across an old structure. There was a faint trail leading to it and old rubs on the trail.

Curiosity struck...I like looking around old structures...and thought I just might find me a buck bed for the fall. Not too uncommon to find a buck bed tucked in near old structures..barns, old farm houses etc...

Didn't get an overview of the area...I was on a mission to find a turkey.

The trail literally led to the doorway. Figuring someone may be doing something illegal inside the building, I peaked inside.

I couldn't believe my eyes

There was a very well defined bed inside to the left of the doorway!

Hard to see but the ground was packed and a depression...covered in white belly hair. The wood behind the bed was worn and stained from the deer and had hair on it...

I am guessing it's a buck bed because of the lone bed and old rubs on the trail.

Being somewhat out of the weather (it was pretty dry inside) it's hard to say how recent it was used...but it looked to been fresh.

I found it very interesting.

I will try to get better pics when I get a camera on it... probably next week I will throw a camera in the vest and get back there....

Anyone ever find anything like that???

My "hang up" is the deer is somewhat trapped. But at the same time, he can see out the hole and both ends were open as well as the doorway...there was "stuff" blocking the ends a bit..but still allowed it to see and hear anything approaching and maybe it could escape...

That's a new one! Deer never cease to amaze me. It would be very interesting to see what class of animal is using that bed. Good find mauser :D

That's pretty cool! I wonder if he only beds there during bad weather or high winds. Like you said, it seems like he's a bit trapped being inside of the structure.

Definitely update this thread once you get some more info on it!

Can't remember where but I think someone online found a similar bed at some point and its posted on the beast somewhere, buck was bedding in an old shed or something similar. I did a quick search and couldn't find it.

I've seen deer bed in old abandoned hog houses and barns a few times, thru the years. You having photo documentation is priceless! Great find!

I found something similar under an overhanging boulder on a ridge line recently. There was a well worn bed covered in hair at the rear of this shallow cave, for lack of a better description. It had great visibility down slope, but only had one escape route.

I figure it is either a bad weather bed, as mentioned in the previous posts, or had some excellent wind conditions that allow the deer plenty of warning in the 3 blind directions.

I was shocked.

Like was said, it'll be really interesting to see what is using it and when they are using it. I wonder if it wasn't mostly just a wintering bed. Probably much more cozy in there opposed to outside.

I will have to look at my options for camera placement. It is 25yds off a old access trail...so I'd imagine I'm not the first nor will be the last hunter to Snoop around the building...so I have to place it wisely...

I don't think I will put it IN the building..but it like to get it close enough to get the doorway and trail. Of course there isn't much for suitable trees right close so we'll see what I can come up with.

I'm pretty excited to see what a camera produces.
