Re: Ticks very bad so far this year.
Last Sunday I found just one crawling towards my hand. But that day I really tried not to think about them at all, and just trust in my permethrin and other repellant.
I'm expecting to see more this weekend.

I can't remember where I saw that someone said the 2nd spring after a really good acorn crop really drives up the tick population. The spring after a good crop brings up the mouse population and then the spring after that with a higher mouse population means more ticks. I don't know if its true but sounded like it could make sense.

No doubt!! My record is 90 some on a 4-5 hour walk
Also had about a 200 yard walk through CRP to check a cam once (parked, walked strait to it and back) and pulled 40 some off me!! Could t believe it. I am wondering if walking on a two wheel track had something to do with it... almost like the “structure” of that trail instinctively had them hang out there. That or that field flat had millions of them in it? Regardless... pretty gross.
I definitely need to start using permethrin.

The 90 tick day I forgot to check for them for about two hours. Looked down at my shirt and there was 3 or 4 heading North. I was like oh man there’s probably going to be 10 in the creases and inseam of my pants. I picked 30 some off right there and probably 15-20 were lined in my crotch inseam.
Thats their #1 hiding spot. Ever hop in your truck and see one crawling on your thighs a few miles down the road? Bet it was in your inseam. You quit moving and they come out from hiding. Inseam and jean wrinkles around your ankles (unless you wear flood pants) those are the two places i’ll Specifically look for them. Find them before they find a feeding area

Trail for sure, they are like deer and love edges. My yard is kind of on the border of the woods and some fields. Woods not many ticks, out in the field not many ticks, get near those edges and they are everywhere in between. That or you can sometimes hit a nest and pick up dozens in a very small area.

Re: Ticks very bad so far this year.
It’s as bad as I have ever seen for ticks and it seems to get worse every year. I will not go into the woods without permethrin on my clothes. I treated a whole outfit just for turkey season, gloves, socks, backpack, everything.
I was doing some Spring yardwork and had a tick on the back of my hand (with gloves on) and one on the back of my leg. That was two weeks ago and I’m still looking at a scabbed up red itchy spot.
I read a tip that you can use a lint roller to remove ticks, if a guy was to have 20+ on him it wouldn’t be a bad idea to try it. You can buy them for a couple bucks at a Dollar store. Keep one in the truck or car.

lyme disease is very very debilitating and is a nasty thing to have none of us need that please everyone be safe spray down and maybe get momma to check you for ticks and you do the same for her lol . i will post this new sickness the lone star tick is spreading as soon as i find out the name . look up the lone star tick
Have read that the lone star tick bites can trigger an immune response to alpha gal, a sugar found in beef, lamb, venison and pork. Worst nightmare for us hunters, being allergic to red meat... Stay safe out there, DEET up w/ 20% or higher and Permethrin for clothing. Also have heard good things about ElimiTick hunting clothing by Gamehide.

Same here! I was out scouting bedding the other day and flicked about 50 off of me. I was mad at myself for not spraying down. I just went out again to finish my scout and had zero on me after spraying down the night before with this...

So simple yet I’m surprised how many skip that part. Lyme disease is no joke.

Re: Ticks very bad so far this year.
A few years back, when I was living in Alabama, I went on a spring scouting mission. Got home and my legs felt like something was crawling all over me. Removed my pants and had 100’s of seed ticks climbing all over, as I must have walked through a nest. I managed to get them all off in the shower with a heavy scrub, but a few days later I had red scratchy bumps all over. Luckily the few that made it above my knees didn’t get ahold.

I spray everything with permethirn.
I got lyme's 5 years ago, and had to take antibiotics for it. Lucky for me, I was diagnosed within a week.

I try not to think of some of the places I’ve had to remove ticks from so far this year.
