dead buck found near pond
i found a nice dead 9 point near the edge of a pond on public. i don't think it was ehd as he had good hard antler with varying coloration. my guess is he died from a buck fight or a hunter killed him and couldn't find him. i think it may have been his bed. the water was about 30' away. they tend to face water while bedding...thoughts?

It could be a number of things the buck died from. I know bucks like to get back to their beds to die I possible, and they also like to get to water, especially if they’ve been shot in the guts.

Beds I have found on ponds were on the backside of dam facing away from water. Not real familiar with ehd so I really don't know always the chance of killed by hunter. Good find none the less.

ehd is from a midge so until temps get below freezing you can get it. we were hit hard in nj this year in all the swamps in early October. it was a awful sight I have found hundreds of dead deer scouting this year threw out my county. very sad to see in a area that's already on a decline from over harvests.

If I were to guess, the buck probably died from injury or disease and was seeking the source. Most bedding I’ve seen on ponds have been behind the dam where the lowest thickest cover is typically located with the dam to his back as a barrier. If you found him that close to the waterline, I would assume he was laying close to drink and get relief.

Delaware was hit pretty hard too. Sorry to hear that ghost. Ive found would be 3 target bucks i would have taken next season. The one i found last week was shot or something besides ehd. Died to late in the year for ehd
The sad part ive read takes 3-5 years to get the herd back. And the midge ehd problem seems to be coming around every 5-6 years

NJ has been going threw ehd for years now this is the first year it was documented in a long time but o well its how it goes i guess. between bad winters mass crops hunting pressure and disease its making smarter stronger healthier deer. its all part of the game ill continue to check my spots because one day they will be back and the beds stay the same. every deer i kill is a new spot any more but eventually it will cycle around again and ill have my next chance it all just part of the game. being a beast hunter means being able to adapt to changes when everybody else is sticking it out in the burned spots we can just find the greener pastures we have the tools and knowledge to do it. this site will make us all big buck serial killers.

Scouting this past weekend on a 50 acre parcel I found 4 dead deer. 1 buck, 1 huge doe and 2 smaller doe.
