The Overlooked...

Unread postby ScottSpitzley » Wed Mar 28, 2018 7:40 am

I made it out of work in time to go scout some public land I had never stepped foot on the last hour or two of daylight last night. Before approaching, I had spent a little time on aerial maps to further identify where I wanted to check, helping my odds before going in blind knowing I did not have a lot of time to walk before it gets dark. There was only one particular spot I had in mind after looking at the map and it happened to be a marshy area with beaten down trails after dissecting the aerial. I pinpointed a few high spots within the marsh with intersecting trails and knew exactly where I wanted to go.

After walking it. I had found multiple trees shredded at head height (I’m 6’1) all the way down past my knees. The beds I had found looked like a bear could have laid in it the way they were matted down. The cattails were demolished through the beaten trails as the aerials didn’t do justice. Let’s just say I had found probably the best spot I have ever scouted as far as finding big buck beds in marshy areas.

The kicker…
This spot was right off the road. I could have parked in a spot right off the road and could have been swimming in this marsh within 10 steps. The parking area was 50 yards to the west of the marsh on the same side of the road with trails leading in every which direction, one of them going right past the marsh. No sign of hunters being in there, stands right off the marsh, empty bottles, tree steps, cameras etc. The walking trails led them in a different area with a lot of area to cover.
It just goes to show how effective these overlooked spots can be for mature bucks. If he is still living, I will assure you I will try my best to not give him a free pass any longer. One more spot added to the list regardless. I am beyond pumped about it.

Here are a few pictures I got in before my phone died

Overlooked Overlooked Overlooked- I need to remember this for my neck of the woods. I bet I am doing what everyone else is doing. I always think further out is better/

I was in the same boat, and I am sure I still do when walking properties. If it wasn't for aerials I would have never found this spot!
