Nice job, and impressive follow-up on both bucks.

I have to say, I am not a real big "people person" when it comes to strangers. I don't think I could hunt an area like that and enjoy myself knowing I would have to gain permission at all those properties if I winged one.

Thank you, brother!

Matt's personality makes just about any episode he's in fun to watch. It's easy to get serious with something you're passionate about, and sometimes there's a place for that, and other times you watch it back and wonder why you weren't loosened up a bit. When Matt and I get together he reminds me to have fun, no matter the circumstance.

Appreciate ya, DaveT1963! Surely am grateful you watched the feedback, and thank you so much for the compliment. That buck haunts me to this day and I'm sure it won't go away. He'll be my primary target come summer to find him back again and see if he's going to keep working through the small area I have to hunt there. Wouldn't that be a story to share, I'd name him the "redemption buck", and I'm not one to typically go on naming deer all too often.

Thanks a bunch, elk yinzer. I'm a socialite in most scenarios, but when it comes to these circumstances I certainly feel my nerves creeping up on me when I make those phone calls, or knock on those doors. I come to find out that I'm often nervous for nothing, but there are the seldom few that prove what the nerves are racked up for...

Cool video. I gotta give you credit. No way I could hunt that small of a spot nestled in amongst all of the houses. I'd go crazy. So any intel on the heartbreak buck yet?

You know, the two brothers that live in the neighborhood and ended up going on the track with us, as well as getting us access to several other pieces to search, they've been keeping a lookout and haven't seen him up to the point I last talked with them, maybe two weeks ago. I plan on reaching out to them again, soon, and hear if they've got eyes on him at all since then. The house where we found the bloody bed, she reached out asking if we recovered the buck, but has not returned my call or text message where I explained the circumstance up to that point and asked if she had seen him. I do plan to reach out to her, again, but fear it may be annoying to her at this point as I'm sure she and her husband aren't fond of my answer that I hadn't recovered the animal. Time will tell. . .

I need to get the cameras off my lease in the central part of the state and move them down here to see if I catch him on camera. It's something I should have done long ago...

Thanks d_rek, and I can appreciate that. So this piece is a 5 acre wood lot and 30 acres of open alfalfa. I suppose it’s all relative.

No sweat just had to rib a little. :D

I bought 4 acres a couple of years ago to build a home on. We cleared the front acre and the back 3 is huntable. I get deer bedding behind the house and have them on camera all the time, but hunting it is extremely challenging! The convenience is nice but it's not my goto spot. Entirely too easy to blow animals out and push them off the property or, worse yet, make them nocturnal!

What was your tactic for hunting the small woodlot? I'm guessing you were able to pattern entry/exit points off the alfalfa field just by glassing?

I have been experimenting behind my house this year with a couple of tactics but nothing has paid off. The neighbor to the west hunts just about every day so i'm sure it has something to do with daytime sightings. And I have this guy torturing me a couple of times a week but he's totally nocturnal!

The best I can come up with is I either need to get permission to hunt adjacent properties where he beds or wait until the rut next year. At this point in our season he's just not going to slip up and come out during daylight.

This is great and reminds me of a few things.

BB Registry had a interview w Roger Raglin and he spoke about a small property story that I thought was really good. The story was really about a 80acre spot but the point is made about small properties being the "Right" properties.

Which reminded me of a story about my Dad from a few seasons ago... One day during rifle season he decided to hunt his favorite old public land spot. When he arrived, there was a log pile and camper blocking the trail to "claim" their spot. So he drove all the way back home and decided to step out back on his very small parcel behind the house. Wound up shooting a nice, respectable 10pt within 30 mins!

One thing that just clicked for me Sam... is the fact that your first buck encounter, Raglin's story and my Dad's old story all - were small overlooked parcels which turned out to be quick hunts!

The buck I most recently killed in early December was a quick 25-minute hunt on 75 acres, but the two bow hunts featured in the video we’re actually a grind on that small piece.

Ah, sorry. I saw the young buck right away then the bigger one, I had just assumed... We both know what happens when someone does that! ;)

Great video, very well done. Congrats on a great buck.

I thought it was very cool how friendly and helpful the neighbors were when searching for the buck, hard to find that nowadays when you almost feel like a criminal for having to ask or fear someone freaking out.

My buck came off a small property this year. My best beds found were on same. It was definitely overlooked being a county property surrounded by private, thankfully I had access through the private to get there. I have had good luck on smaller parcels (150ac or less) the bigger properties have always frustrated me lol.

And I agree with quickness, my buck was killed in under an hour and the doe was 15 mins.
