Curious to see what time everyone thinks thermals switch, 10a seems a little late for me in central Illinois, I usually think its around 830ish during November, but always wonder what other people think.

I think it mainly depends on what time the sun hits the hillside. The ridge I hunt is fairly late because it's a north slope and doesn't see sun until later in the morning

Yep. It depends on the terrain. I hunt a NW facing steep hillside above some cliffs and the sun does not hit the cliffs directly until after noon, about 2pm this time of year. So sometimes I get rising thermals after that for a bit and then they fall again when the sun goes down shortly. But usually the thermals just pull down in this spot, there is never much of an updraft.
Some do. Some don't. I just might...

Re: Excellent video on thermals!
Time of year is a huge factor as well I believe Dan mentioned this in the past... foliage blocks the floor which delays thermals. Once your leaves are gone the thermals tend to pick up faster

Cool video, but I’m confused. So thermals wind occurs everyday based on the sun position. This occurs independent of the actual wind direction. I just don’t know how to apply this to hunting. Does a hunter focus on the wind or thermals? If your strategy is hunting the top 1/3 travel corridor on the leeward side, do you only hunt In the AM for thermal purposes?

I imagine thermal wind speed might be dictated by the UV index or barometer, but generally is the speed consistent? Does the wind direction only trump thermals if the it’s a 15 mph wind?

The sun has too heat the ground for thermals to kick in.

I found Randy Newberg this past summer while researching and planning a September elk hunt. He shares and teaches in his videos, Using the rock explaining thermals was cool. Thanks for posting.

Great video, the first minute he mentions the 1/3 down elevation from the top of the him.. that large rock was a nice prop for the discussion

Yep, the elk were bedded exactly like a big buck would be. I also wonder if the wind was coming over the top as well when the hunters spooked them from the top. I bet it was
