How far will he go for food at night?
So I have a buck that has been showing up between the hours of 10-2 in the morning sporadically during the season. Around an acorn area that I’ve previously scouted. My question is, how far will a buck travel for food at night? Does it just vary? I have a swamp I thought he was Bedding in, but it’s about 2.5 miles away. It seemed kind of far for a buck to want to travel even at night. Any thoughts?

There's a gps study from South Carolina, I think, and there was an older buck studied that traveled 2+ miles each night to a bean field.

Ok so it’s not a far fetched routine?

If that’s the closest big buck bedding area then I think it’s not out of the question. Just heard a podcast with Don Higgins. One of his 200” bucks he had on cam 3 miles apart within 17 hours. His area is mostly corn and beans with small pieces of cover

I gotcha. I’m hunting mostly pine country with two swamps around me. One is maybe 200 yards long and 100 wide. The other is right in the edge of a drop zone(hunting an army base that drops soldiers over the dz). The drop zone is about 2.5 miles long and this swamp runs the entire length of it....so it’s a bit overwhelming. Gonna drive along the trails of the swamp and try to find tracks coming out of it.

Any major beast hunters wish to dm me and give me your inputs on the area? I’m to the point I may just pay for Dans flight and let him come nail this buck down

Re: How far will he go for food at night?
I have tracked multiple late season bucks from prime secure primary marsh beds that traveled almost 2 miles to a standing cornfield or other food source to feed. It’s nothing for a deer to travel a few miles to feed at night during times of high hunting pressure.
When the temps get brutally cold they may bed a little bit closer to conserve energy but you can bet if there is no real secure bedding close by they will still travel a long distance.

Late season,I know of bucks that traveled more than a mile to feed on corn behind our house.
