Wind switch

Unread postby Dressedtokill » Wed Oct 18, 2017 4:28 am

New to this style of hunt but starting to get some good intel for next year or hopefully this year. My question is we had a good front blow thru yesterday mid day with a huge temp drop but the wind was SW in am and NNE in pm. How does this affect where a mature buck is bedding? I've heard he has several beds in an area but how far will he go if the wind shifts on him mid day or not go?

Seems to depend on the type of bedding he's in.

On a point in hill country, he may move a few yards over to the other side of the point, or if it doesn't set up well for that wind then move altogether to a different point. Keep in mind, though, that a wind switch is not typically a straight 180 degree change, but rather a gradual shift around from SW to W to NW to N and then stabilizing at NE in this case. He may stand and reposition a few times as the shift occurs.

In extremely thick areas where the bedding is a bit less wind-specific, a buck may only change what direction he's laying or move to the opposite side of a specific piece of back cover.
