Source for topo maps?

Unread postby Stump » Sat Jan 29, 2011 3:15 am

I read somewhere that someone was using google topo maps, unless I wasn't reading correctly. If so, how do you access them?

Any other good sources for topos? Free preferred. :D

have to disagree, I have used both and prefer the plug in that uses google earth

GE is the standard for arials

you can easily switch back and forth with the topo plug in by toggling on and off in Google earth

76,

I definitely like the google option since I use it quite a bit already and flipping back and forth in one application would be handy! Though.....I consider myself pretty computer savvy, but I don't know how to load the topo option. ha, ha Do you have to sign up for the google API key and then upload something?

My Topo is awesome. They only charge you 29.95 year and you can print as many as you want. And you can also print aerial maps as well. And you can also save them to jpeg. You can also upload your gps coordinates and marked waypoints.

a few considerations

the topo map resolution is better in google earth than in acme mapper

you also have to deal with the 'mytopo.com' on all your topos in acme mapper

There is no way to save way points and locations in acme mapper

I agree with you acme mapper is easier to figure out how to use than the google earth overlays :D :D

Not sure if Im using the same overlay for google earth that you guys are, but my topos arent that great in the Google Earth program. For topos, I always go to acmemapper because the resolution is so much better.

Are you talking about the google earth that you download to your computer, or just the thing that comes up when you do a search for an area on the web?

yes im sure he is talking about the program you download, google earth v6 i think is out now.

also, 'BING MAPS' has aerial pics like GE, but they also have a great feature available in some areas the are called 'BIRDSEYE views' and the detail is amazing.

Heres a link to a thread I started back in August when I joined. You can see the pics i was speaking about..

birdseye view is AMAZING where available, no where I hunt is available yet though

How do you get images (jpg files) out of acme mapper??

Use a screen shot then put them into a photo program??
