What GPS do you use?

Unread postby msw08d » Mon Sep 25, 2017 6:42 am

Getting ready to take the plunge and go full on beast. Gonna be hunting some huge Louisiana swamps and will need a GPS for sure. Was looking at the Garmin 64st but it is nearly 300 bucks including tax. Wanted to see what GPS other guys are using and having good luck with. Thanks.

I have the 64. Don't know if I can overlay aerials or not - haven't figured it out if I can.

I do have an onXmaps chip but the chip doesn't have aerials either.

If I was getting a new one I'd get one I could overlay aerials on.

64s with onx map chip. My iphone has aerials should I need them. I use them both a lot in the woods, but I will not forget my gps. Worth its weight in gold to me

I have a Garmin Oregon 650t, I like it so far! Battery lasts long and I can overlay images of the areas I hunt to get property lines and aerial photos. It's $300 at Cabela's.

I wouldn't cause it's very hard to use it with gloves on. Just my personal preference. Hate my phone when it's cold out cause I have to take my gloves off to use it

I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

I use a bushnell backtracker. It's simple and you can ping the car and 2 other spots on it and you just fallow the arrow when you select what spot. It's the size of a stop watch and cheap. Nothing fancy but it helps.

Garmin 62s

Keep in mind that the (S) is for Storage, the (T) is for Topomaps, and the (C) is for Camera. The GPS's don't all come with topomaps. A STC comes with all three but the S doesn't have the topo maps or the camera.

The Garmin topo maps are about $100.00. The topo that come with the gps are not as detailed as when you buy them separately. Pay attention to the scale on each product.

I bought the S model and installed a large miniSD card. I got my topomaps for free at GPSFileDepot.com and they are more than sufficient for my needs.

If you are planning on getting an OnXMap chip you may not need to get the topomaps at all. IDK as the chip isn't available where I am. It's worth a call for sure to maybe save $100.00.

Onx has topos. But just the standard topos you get on caltopo and stuff. Nothing fancy but effective
