T'was the Night Before Deer Hunting
It's FINALLY here! At least, for my fellow Wisconsinites. No doubt everyone is equally excited, so in honor of it being the day before deer hunting, I figured a little tribute was in order. Enjoy!
T’was the night before deer season, and all through the house
Every hunter was stirring, annoyed was their spouse.
The camo was hung by the Lone Wolf with care,
In hopes that tomorrow a buck would trot there.
The buck, no longer nestled in his bed,
Stood under the moon where he quietly fed.
And every Beast Hunter with their scouting, planning his trap,
Knew exactly where the bed lay when the beast comes to nap
When sitting out in my stand, there arose such a clatter,
I froze for a moment to see what was the matter.
Away in the swamp I saw a white flash,
A tail flicker, and brown sloshing and splash.
The sun on the bead of the new-morning dew,
Gave the luster of mid-day to the marauding hue.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
11 points and a droptine stepping out into the clear.
With a flick of some milkweed, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment the thermals had kick.
More rapid than eagles, like a phantom he came,
He sniffed and he snorted, while I monitored the frame.
Now frozen. Now alert. Now standing and tall.
On my feet. On the edge. On a full draw.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around.
Down the transition he came with a bound.
He was caked in mud, from his knee to his hoof,
As if his bedding needed any more proof.
A bundle of bones he had adorning his head,
Unquestionably the beast, from last season’s shed.
His eyes-how they darted. His ears standing on high.
His steps they were purposeful, his nose wouldn't lie.
Never breaking stride, he began trotting on past
As my heart pounded and raced, I knew this chance would be my last.
Boldly I bleated and the trees echoed my “Meah”
In hopes for a mere moment long stay.
Hearing my plea, he paused from his work.
Stopping in his tracks, he turned with a jerk.
And laying my finger aside my release,
My arrow flew through the air as if coated in grease.
Greeting the monster with a bone-crushing thwack,
He sprang off his feet, arching his back.
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When met with his haste, trailed in the sky.
So in through the thicket the beast he flew,
With a deafening crash, I immediately knew.
I descended my treestand with purposeful haste,
Ensuring no daylight would soon go to waste.
Marsh water flooding my boots soon worried me least,
When my eyes finally laid upon the mythical beast.
Hours of work I still have in store,
Traversing a mile of swamp, perhaps a bit more.
I sweat and I ache, my muscles they burned
But my face keeps on grinning from the efforts I earned.
As I load up the truck, a hunter queries my prey.
With the honesty of Nixon I confess my location that day.
I sprang to my seat, and quickly drove into the night.
Stealthy hunting to all, and may a beast be in your sight!
