Whats the highest you would climb?

Unread postby johndeere506 » Tue Sep 12, 2017 5:25 am

Ive been wondering, especially with all the Eberhart talk recently (although I read his book years ago stating 30ft high), how high do you need to be to "maybe reduce" the deer that pick you off?

I would NOT count on this for bed hunting, but when the rut is on, and the wind isn't perfect, I'm still hunting. How high do you think you would go? I think 30ft would feel crazy high. Consider gun hunting also, so the shot angle doesn't matter as much. Just curious how how you think you need to be, or how high you would be willing to go to try.

I may set a couple marginal wind stands and find out what 30ft up feels like to see if there is an improvement.

Personally, I dont think you will eliminate it, but on reasonably flat ground, the wind is "mostly" going parallel to the ground. Sure it will mix at some distance, but is 30ft better than 20. Would 35 be noticeably better than 30? Etc etc.

My bow rope is cut to 30 feet and there have been times I've pulled my bow off the ground by a few feet. I very rarely go that high in order to try and beat the wind. Usually i'm going that high because i'm out in the open and trying to get out of their line of sight. I do believe being high can help your wind blow over them in certain situations.

As high as needed. Last year I climbed up a pine tree for an observation sit before season and just sat on a branch. I knew I was up there when I went from not having a chance to wrap around the trunk of the tree to being able to almost get around it with one arm. I dug out my rangefinder and ranged the ground below, 42 yards. :D

126 feet high!

Bowhunting I range from 5 feet to 25 feet. Rifle hunting usually in the 25-30 foot range.

I would say I hunt 25-30 ft when I can. There are times I may be higher and alot of times when I'm lower. If I have a good tree I will get up there.

As high as I can get with a rifle. I've probably been over 50'. 30' is about my max with the bow

I have been over 50ft with a bow in hand on a stand or 2. For those who have never been that high it feels like u r on skyscraper. In these cases with the terrain, I was just barely over eye level of the deer. I only hunt as high as I have to and around 22 ft is my cut off for my shooting comfort. It does me no good to go higher if I can't make a ethical shot!

65 feet!?!?! Holy crap that is up there! The highest I've been is around 35 feet in a rifle stand. Archery the highest is about 25 feet but 20 feet is about the norm for most locations.

15-25. I don't think the rewards outweigh the risk above that
