Do you Split the Pelvis?

Unread postby Horizontal Hunter » Mon Sep 04, 2017 12:49 am

I have never bothered to split the pelvis. I just cut around and pull through.

Do you split the pelvis on deer or bear when you field dress them? Why? What do you gain by doing it?

Thanks,

Bob

sometimes I do and sometimes I dont.

I am not certain what you gain, but if I am close to the truck I put a sharp axe on it and drive with a couple taps from another axe or hammer. It opens it up to rinse out if you want, it helps make certain you get all the bluckard out.

I have seen some people really unskilled in the art of cutting around and pulling through. Those people should definitely split the pelvis

Only when it's warmer and I'm not going to get it butchered right away. Cools off quicker when I can swing that leg open. I use a mini hand saw

Nope. Never have. I don't cut the balls off or split the rib cage either.

A big buck has a tough thick pelvis. Not like a small doe.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I do. Only takes a minute with a pelvic saw. Every time I watch someone try and get all the innards out without splitting it, it seems like a pain in the but.

Seems like everyone guts a deer a bit different. Watched a guy slit a doe's throat and pull the esophogus out once.

Most guys use too big of a knife for this. It's much easier with a narrow bladed knife.

Yes, I always do. I like to splay them open to cool.. Easier to clean out rear end.. takes little time to do.
