Acorns
I've seen some trees start to drop a few acorns here and there, not many yet. Last year here in the northeast it seemed to be a huge acorn year in terms of numbers. Will this year be similar? Just wanted to hear some thoughts.

Re: Acorns
In central VA, last year did not have a huge acorn crop. Some trees had acorns early but they didn't last.
Based on scouting this year, some red oaks high in the mountains had acorns as well as red and white oaks on the tips. Down lower away from the mountains I've seen some loaded white oaks and no red oaks. Definitely have to check area by area or even tree by tree in some places.

Re: Acorns
The acorn crop here in my area of the Shenandoah Valley is very sparse this year. Last year we had a bumper crop.

Re: Acorns
The White Oaks in southern WI are dropping pretty hard and bit early. Usually acorns are a good opening weekend tactic..

Re: Acorns
From what I can tell things seems about the same as last year in my area of western PA. A few really good areas and then sparse everywhere else. I found one good oak flat the other day and it was already dropping quite a few. The area was already torn up, which led me to place a two man ladder stand for when I take the little man out.

Re: Acorns
In Eastern WV lots of white oak and chestnut oak acorns, bumper crop for sure. Red oak is hit or miss. It was a good crop of red oak acorns last year up high on the ridges, so most trees produced last year and will not produce again this year. Heavy crop of black cherry, beech nuts also for the deer. And plenty of walnuts and hickory nuts for the bears and squirrels.
Some do. Some don't. I just might...

Reds are good. Most of the oaks by me are red with whites mixed in. There are a couple patches of black oaks, but those are bad.
When in doubt if acorns are good, just try them. That will let you know whats good and whats not. I have tried some reds that were awful, and the next tree was much better. Guess which tree had the deer by it. Learned that trick when some deer ate all the vegetables in a buddies garden the day before he was going to harvest them. Almost like they know whats good and when
