Million Dollar Prize!

Unread postby NorthStar » Tue Aug 15, 2017 2:20 am

Now that I have your attention....

There is a lot of talk about targeting mature deer on this site and that’s the way it should be but what about preferred tactics for just putting meat in the freezer? How about I frame this up as a hypothetical question?

You are offered a million dollars if you can shoot a doe within a 4 hour sit. You must follow your local hunting laws and you must use a bow to get the job done. You can pick any day, time, and public land you choose as long as it’s during the bow season and within legal shooting hours.

Describe in detail…
-The type of day you are looking for (temps, moon, wind, perception, etc)
-Time of day
-Time of year
-Location (food plot, funnel, bedding, etc)
-Other miscellaneous tactics

on an oak flat, the first morning after after a torrential rain, high wind storm, after acorns began to naturally fall around Oct 30 here. 40 minute walk to make a down wind loop of it, and cover the thick stuff coming out of the oaks.

Any evening of the season that it's not raining and winds less than 15 mph. Location just outside of bedding. 15' up a tree. 4 hours is more than needed.

It's not that I'm good, cause I'm not, we just have a bunch of does and they're easy.

Morning/evening it don't matter. Go sit up over the closest corn feeder and count my winnings.

I have a spot I can think of...mine is a great little outside corner of a transition from old/overgrown clearcut to hardwoods. They always shortcut the outside corner!
Spot is just above a great doe bedding area
Morning or evening doesnt matter much
Prefer a real cold day with an East, SouthEast wind. Ive done exactly this setup before. Almost a sure kill by 830am and or an hour before dark

2nd week of October, downwind of a beaten down trail between a doe bedding area and the neighbors feed pile, . Been doing it for years. Last year I was in the tree for 15 minutes

I've been wanting to pose this same question. I hope to be more of a beast hunter one day, but this will be my first year bowhunting, I was only introduced to the site a few months ago, and I am recovering from a knee surgery. My primary goal this year will just be getting within bow range of a doe on public land.

Welcome to the site Brick1083. Take care of that knee and good luck this year!

Brick, sounds like a great goal which isn't as easy as some who have never tried with a bow make it out to be. Stick with it brotha and climb the ladder. Be looking 4 ya in the kill thread.
