Went scouting
The other day while i was scouting i went to the sidehill of a ridge to get some film to show you all what i found during the hunting season. It was definatly a buck bed and it was beet down to the dirt and all the rubs around it were kinda weird looking. But i filmed some of the weirdest looking ones. Im not even sure if a deer made them, but if he did it looks like he was chewing on the trees. And thes are not the first trees i found in the area looking like this.
Check it out and tell me what you think

Re: Went scouting
PTC, my best guess:
Moose, whitetail and other ungulates will eat bark off of trees, especially during the winter. When moose eat bark, it is called "barking" (go figure). I have found very similar markings on trees from whitetails eating bark with their fresh tracks in the snow right at the tree. It does not take a buck to do this, doe's also eat bark on occasion. Those scratches are likely teeth marks from the lower jaw of a whitetail.
When moose eat bark from saplings around 2" in diameter or slightly larger it looks like someone skipped a chainsaw up and down one side of the sapling. I've taken pics of this in the past, not sure where I saved them...

Thanks, thats good to know .. There were some actual rubs that were there too. In the snow this was the only bed and there were no other ones around. I have my trail camera set up over the bed now so i will take more pics of the real rubs once i go get it.

Re: Went scouting
I've seen elk do this in the past on aspen trees in high altitude, looks quite strange being pretty high up the tree, due to snow depth in the winter.
By your video and description appears to be porcupines, they will do that all the way up a tree at times, sometimes just at ground level. Usually can tell by the deep incisior marks in the bark.
