Rage Hypodermic Question
Hey Beasts, I am going bear hunting this fall andante looking for new broadheads. I have been using Slick trick broadheads for the past 3 years because I shoot a little lower poundage but they don't open the animals up as much as I'd like. I was thinking about the Rage Hypodermic as I have seen how massive of entry and exit holes they create. I also like the fact that they shoot the same as a field point does. But I'm wondering how many pounds I should be pulling to shoot them? I am 14 years old and have a 24 inch drawlength. My arrows are 400 grain. Any suggestions?

I've been shooting 400 gr. 59 lbs with the hypos and feel it's borderline. Any less weight on either end and i would opt for a fixed head. JMHO

Re: Rage Hypodermic Question
On a lower ke set up I would go with the fixed head especially for a larger more solidly built animal like a bear.

Id look at the Hypodermic +P's. Its the Inch and a half cut, low kenetic energy head.

Re: Rage Hypodermic Question
I bought some Rage Hypo+P 1.5s and they look & feel real good. The cam action is free-floating - absolutely zero resistance.
The way they work is to have a semi-sharp point, it pushes the skin in and then the plastic collar on the back breaks, blades sweep out and cut a larger than life entrance wound, blades stay back as long as there is resistance.
OH - I'm gonna be shooting 50 pounds this year with about the same arrow weight, 29 inch draw. The Hypo+P is made for lower poundage bows.
I don't know about bears. I'd be comfortable with the hypo+P on deer and hogs. No experience with bears.

Re: Rage Hypodermic Question
Forkhorn, what poundage are you shooting? When in doubt, I would recommend staying with fixed. Especially if they are properly tuned and shooting well. That being said, if the mechanical is a must have, the aforementioned hypo +P looks to be a good choice.

Re: Rage Hypodermic Question
I really like a fixed blade cut on contact head. You can get your broadheads and field points hitting together. It just may take adjusting your arrow rest a little. Lots of YouTube videos on that. If you want better blood trails maybe look into a single bevel head. They absolutely work as advertised. I like the Strickland helix heads. They are more expensive initially but they can be resharpened and used for years. Best of luck this year!

Re: Rage Hypodermic Question
I'd also strongly recommend sticking with a fixed head for a rig with less energy/momentum. Don't need a giant hole, just for the hole to be in the right spot.

Re: Rage Hypodermic Question
I think the +P's would work fine inside 30 yds. But a Magnus Stinger or Slick Trick Viper Trick would be alot better option. Cut on contact heads always have a spot in my quiver. My favorite style of broadhead!

I have used the hypos for a about 3 years now there amazing but in my opinion I wouldn't use them on a bow with low kenetic energy

Re: Rage Hypodermic Question
I've been itching to try some Hypos myself. Use the KE calculator i've posted below and just try to keep it above 60 or higher for the 2" cut. I think the +P hypodermics are rated for 50 or higher. (When I say rated for 50 I dont mean 50 pounds i mean joules. Im pretty sure KE is measured in joules but im not positive.) I would figure out what poundage you could get up to and still draw comfortably then crunch some numbers with that calculator and see what would be the best one to go with if you did choose to go with the hypo's...

Re: Rage Hypodermic Question
I don't know exactly what poundage I'm pulling but am going into an archery store on Monday to have them figure that out. I'll let you guys know after that and if you could tell me what you think, that would be great. Thanks guys!

Re: Rage Hypodermic Question
I'd stick with fixed heads for bear. You would probably be ok for deer but a bear is a much different animal. The last thing you want is minimal penetration and walking through the woods with a wounded bear

Re: Rage Hypodermic Question
I would stick with a fix blade. If you want a big cut check out the steelforce big phat head broadheads. They are a 2 blade fix blade with a 1 1/2 cut. They fly right with field tips and Super sharp.
Hoyt RX7 bow, and exodus broadheads
