Buck rubs

Unread postby Newhunter » Mon Jul 31, 2017 7:27 pm

When do the bucks start rubbing the velvet off their antlers in the northern region of the country, like in Michigan? lol

Most of the big boys start showing up without velvet around Labor Day here, would imagine Michigan is similar. The yearlings are a week or two later. They don't seem to do much rubbing for the first week or two. I never bother looking for rubs until about the last two weeks of September.

Thank you. I'll still do some scouting, but now I know if I see a run it is most likely one from last year.

It is pretty easy to tell a fresh rub from one a year or more old, on a fresh rub the wood exposed is bright.

My understanding is that the velvet rubs........or rubbing to get the velvet off often occurs near bedding, and is often done to multiple small trees close together......the rest of the rubs start in October sometime......that's my understanding anyway.

I was under the impression bucks don't rub trees too remove velvet. It naturally splits and comes of off, bone doesn't itch or anything. Occasionally large pieces will get on a bucks nerves and he will try to remove it in bushes. But once he is hard antlered he if fully capable of breeding just waiting for the ladies to join the party. I start seeing territorial rubs in Sept.

If I find very fresh rubs near known bedding opening weekend you can bet that's were I will be setting up. Velvet rubs are usually right in the staging area close to bedding. I know of plenty of opening day bucks killed with this tactic.
