like everyone else the height I hunt is determined by terrain and wind direction. Has varied from 15' to as much as 38'. I will always look for a tree that offers cover in the 15 to 20 foot range to offer me the best shot angles for good clean ethical shots, but is usually dictated by the terrain.

Depends on the tree, terrain, location, etc...usually between three and five lone wolf sticks for me, sometimes an additional tree peg or two.

Marty did you kill outta that tree :?: What was the goal doe hunt or buck hunt :?:

I would say my average is 16-20ft... I love setting inside a split like above or between 2-3 trees that are tight together. Big pines are great for getting up higher and feeling safe but the sap is a pain

No trees big enough to put stands in for most of my better spots (very thick cover), so about 5-8 ft in tripods and homemade step ladder stands. If I do hunt in more open areas, then I average about 20 ft.

On my private land spots all my stands right now are 28 to 30 ft. But I have some spots scouted where my only option may be around 10 ft on the edge of some cattails. I've learned a ton on this site and now realize higher isnt always better, you have to evaluate the situation first to determine proper height.

I can only speak for hunting relatively flat ground, but I find that if you can't go fairly high, you are better off being closer to the ground, particularly in the evening with falling thermals. I have found that the mid-height stands 12-15 ft are the worst for getting winded, if the wind swirls or in no wind conditions. When you are fairly high your scent is more likely to pass above their noses and when you are low to the ground, especially in the evenings, your scent drops to the ground and is less likely to reach their noses.

A lot of the times in marsh if you start getting up to the 20 foot range the bucks see you climbing. Most marsh set ups are on the edge of cattails, dogwood, or other low vegetation the bucks can see over.

Some places I hunt I can touch the bottom of my lock on. Then sometimes I might be 25 feet high. Depends on cover.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

This evening I was five feet high hunting in thick brush and no big trees. I had a doe come through at 10 yards and she never even looked at me. If I would have been 10 feet or higher I would have been sky lined.

To answer the question.......it depends. I am really gaining confidence in hunting low when the terrain features dictates it.

Always wonder about this...does anyone have an idea or experience on how high you need to be on flat timbered ground so the wind will pass over them assuming you are within 30 yards or less of the trails:

a) No or little wind
b) 5-10 variable
c) Steady 10-15

I know there are a lot of other variables but just assuming a "normal" woodlot, or even something like Zap's pics posted previously on this thread.

Always a good topic to dig up this time of year since those of us hanging permanent stands like to get them up around now. For me it depends on a lot of things. Size of tree, branches, on the tree, cover, deer paths, etc. I have hung stands as low as 6 feet and up to 23 feet. For me, I like 17 feet. Not sure why but when I am done hanging I usually see that they are about 17 feet but that in the perfect situation though. Many times their are too many variables.
