First scouting trip to Missouri

Unread postby cwalker5586 » Mon May 01, 2017 5:34 am

A friend and I made our first trip to northern Missouri this weekend to scout public land for bow hunting. First impression, nw Missouri is hilly, not southern Ohio hilly, but hilly. And what we thought would be crop field on satellite was all pasture land. Beautiful area though. The public hunting areas looked good most where too accessible though, we where hoping to find the hard to get to spots that might require a boat or waders to get to but finding those spots was sparse, most had gravel trails and access points all around them. We did manage to find 2 spots between nw and ne Missouri that will require at least waders to get in, they should hunt well as long as other guys don't have the same plan but out of 12 ca's we found 2 that where like this. another thing we noticed is there are no really heavy defined deer trails like there is here in mi. Any of you guys ever hunted Missouri? Any tips on what you looked for when scouting? Places to look? Places to avoid?

I am from that area of Missouri. The MDC organization has a good amount of money to spare so their areas are typically easiest to access. Makes it nice for overall public use but harder to find mature bucks. Sounds like your on the right track. Stick to areas with rivers or lakes and you'll find them.

I got the same feeling too. Way too Accessible to get away from others.

Would have to agree that most of MDC land is way to easily accessible. With roads and access points usually set up all around the property it makes it though. What I've found is that time of year is the key. Most of the time in early bow season on up through say later October if your willing to walk you can get away from most of the hunters. Steeper the terrain the better too. Come November, all bets are off. Everyone and their brother starts to hit the woods and during rifle season it often looks like a pumpkin patch on most public land areas with orange vest everywhere.

There are big bucks out there on public land but you have to do the work and get where others are not. Good luck
